It works fine, and of course it's not as good as DDR4, but is DDR4 $60 better? Not really.

Then it would run at 1300mhz. Considering you have a low tier GPU anyway faster RAM isn't a big deal.

Just going to throw this out there - Quit pairing 7th generation CPUs with 100 series chipsets. It's a massive gamble whether or not it will actually work. It isn't worth the risk. If you're going to suggest a 7th generation CPU, pair it with a 200 series chipset. If you're going to suggest a 6th generation CPU, pair it with a 100 series chipset.

Here are some of my suggestions:

1. This is if you're alright with pushing the budget. It includes the new AMD Ryzen 5 1400, which performs exceptionally with it's 4 cores/8threads. I included a B350 motherboard so you can overclock. I also included 3000MHz RAM as Ryzen benefits from higher RAM speed. This motherboard has fantastic room for upgrades. This is my personal recommendation. Alternatively, you could wait for the lower priced Ryzen 3, which should be coming soon.

$300: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GzvNjc *Note: The motherboard is available on Newegg.com for $79.99. Not sure why it isn't showing that on pcpartpicker.

2. This one is a great bang for your buck and leaves some cash to spare. It has got the Intel Pentium G4560 - best budget dual core around. This motherboard has fantastic room for upgrades. If you wanted you could increase the RAM to 16gb instead of 8gb and still stay in your budget.

$190: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GwRmWX

3. This one is just slightly over budget. It includes the 4 core/4 thread Intel i5 6400. I opted for the 6th generation instead of 7th generation because the 100 series motherboards are cheaper. There is little real world performance increase from the 6th to 7th generation. It's worth noting this motherboard has less room for upgrading than option 1 and 2.

More important than fast memory is to get Samsung B-Die memory as it tends to cooperate more with Ryzen's IMC. The memory you chose uses SK-Hynix DRAM.

If you've got a suggestion for a Samsung B-Die memory kit that is still a decent price, I'd love to hear it. Regardless if he gets Samsung B-Die or SK-Hynix there shouldn't be too much of a problem getting to 2666.

EDIT: Replaced it with a Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000MHz (2x4) kit (CMK8GX4M2B3000C15). It should be Samsung B-Die. Correct me if I'm wrong.

No it's not.

As I understand it Kaby and Skylake use DDR3L and DDR4 at 1.3v while DDR3 is 1.5v. the 1.5 volt RAM will supposedly burn up the memory controller on the CPU. My voltages may be off, but I hope you understand my point. Everything I have read says DDR3 is no good. DDR3L is another story.

The problem with that argument is that plenty of people have been running Haswell CPUs (myself included) for almost four years with RAM running at 1.65v or higher -- Haswell is only rated for 1.5v. You're not going to burn up the IMC by running DDR3.

Actually it depends, high speed DDR3 like mine works great, but ~DDR3 1600 does hold Skylake/Kabylake back performance wise.

PS: there's really no risk running DDR3 with Skylake/Kabylake since VDIM voltage has nothing to do with the IMC, the only ram related voltages related to the IMC are VCCIO/VCCSA.

Yes, DDR3 will have a performance hit compared to DDR4, but not one you care about when paired with a G4560/i5-7500 and a GTX960. And I was referring to DDR3 not being dangerous to run. And frankly, even if I had a 1080Ti, I don't think the $60 to upgrade to DDR4 would be worthwhile.
