But then again patents in the US are weird so they can easily build a large monopoly for a decade with those.

Apple has a higher markup than the rest of the industry but it's not like Samsung, HTC, LG and the rest aren't making a large profit on every flagship phone sale. That's the nature of halo products. You can't just look at BoM cost either. There is a lot more to it than that. Qualcomm is just trying to piggyback on the success of others through something not unlike extortion. I mean everyone would ditch Qualcomm if it was viable and there is good reason to believe their monopoly is ending in a couple of years. So I guess they want to squeeze as hard as they can before the source runs dry.

 

They could just increase unit price if they wanted more money but they prefer the percentage for obvious reasons. Apple isn't being singled out. Everyone gets this treatment.

Both companies are very much American. In fact they're 420 (blaze it) miles apart, so that means Tim Cook can drive down there and slap Steven across the face if he wanted to.

Agree... But they'll probably get it overturned. It's monopolistic and restricts competitors from competing with Qualcomm.

They can buy their modems from Intel going forward, so it's a good opportunity to stomp on their abusive ex now that they've moved out of the house - so to speak.
