I'm planing of building or buying a backup system, I'm not sure what I want. I can't have a rack in my apartment due to space. I want a system that automatically checks SMART status of the HDD. I want it to be accessible only in my LAN, for now I'm thinking of some synology NAS with RAID 1. What are your opinions?

You should prob state how many computers and how much storage.

for one computer I use USB.

the nas I run has raid0 for hourly backup and one drive for back up of the raid on a cheap A4. It's been working very well with good performance.
