PC Upgrade from 2500k

Hello ,

I currently am running 2500k on a Gigabyte UD3 mobo and Hyper 212x cooler with 16gb ram and a GTX 980Ti G1 Gaming.

I use my computer for gaming, programming/work and Video and Photo Editing. I'm mainly thinking of upgrading my CPU to have more threads to help with the video editing.

PS my gaming is done on a 4k 60hz panel and I am more for the cinematic of games than raw performance and I also watch 4k content when available. My 2500k performs just fine in all games I play so it's not really an upgrade aimed for gaming.

What do you guys think about this upgrade path? Any other options?

You're gonna want faster ram for Ryzen, especially for gaming. Also, the 1700 is gonna be quite a bit better for your work stuff, although 12 threads vs your current 4 is gonna be a lot

Its pricy (I didn't) try and get either CAS 14 3200mhz or CAS 16 3600mhz

CAS 14 3000 MHz RAM is also B-Die :)

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

the differnce is huge here in NZ and cannot justify the cost

That's fair enough, you really need to get faster ram though, I ran benchmarks of my build on 4790k prior to the refresh and then with 2133, 2666 and now 2933

2133 MHz (could be 2400)

2933 MHz today

so like 6 - 7 FPS jump (this is also at 1440P, expect bigger jumps at 1080P, smaller at 4k but % will be the same) I cant get 3200mhz yet

I mean you really don't need a X370 motherboard. The b350 is a good chipset and the r7 1700 is a really good cpu. That being said the 1600 is a fantastic deal too. Either way you are getting a good cpu.

Its not about the chipset really its more about this being a micro ATX that looks budget adn not many features

Also the X370 motherboards aren't worth it unless you want to sli or crossfire Tbh so getting a b350 motherboard isn't a bad idea at all.

Yeah I guess if you really need all the features of the other motherboard. The 1600 is still a beast of a cpu so if you want to go for that I would just say go for it.
