RX 480 8Gb vs GTX 1060 6Gb

tyler1

Which one do you think I should get? They are at the same price, and the RX 500 series aren't available for now in my country. Also I'm playing at 1280x1024 monitor and I have a Xeon E5640 16RAM DDR3.

The 1060 have better software support, and the older titles and almos all dx11 games run better on nvidia. Tho SCGazelle has a point there. Also you coud buy an RX 470 + monitor from that budget, and the RX 470 is a decent carg for 1080p gaming.

I would also agree that you should upgrade your monitor first before buying a new GPU.

The 8GB RX 480 and the 6GB GTX 1060 perform almost identically, but I tend to favor AMD cards over NVIDIA cards as Freesync Monitors are much cheaper than GSync Monitors.

depends on the game or app, but check out the rx 480 benchmarks with recent drivers, its kinda catching up to the 1060, but the rx 580 beats the 1060.

Freesync and gsync are still not so popular, in a few years (I hope) they will be a common feature and monitors with adaptive technologies will be cheaper. Then if you have a tight budgets (as It looks like) I would buy a regular ips 1080p monitor (which youll use as a secondary monitor in 3-4 years maybe) and the 1050 ti and if you cant afford it (the gpu + monitor) , go for the 470 or even cheaper, the 460 (which performs great for "e-sports-like" games, and doest fairly good for AAA games) and remember to upgrade your monitor is always your first priority!

The rx 480 has crossfire support And note that vulcan improves performance on the rx 480 8gb than the 1060 6 gig.The 1060 is a great card but is was released before vulcan. If you don't care about that than just buy one.

What sort of games are you playing? Generally I would recommend the 1060, but the RX480 may have better optimization for the games you play, so I suggest you either tell us or look up benchmarks for both cards in the respective games on Youtube or Tech Forums.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. I'm planning to upgrade my monitor next year, so my first priority is to get a new GPU. They cost the same price while the RX 480 4gb and the 1060 3gb cost 50$ less, and the RX 470 4gb and 1050 Ti cost 100$ less. These are the options that I have, so which one do you think I should get considering that I'm planning to get FreeSync 1080p monitor next year.

EDIT : Also I wanted to know why they would be overkill for my monitor, does it change performance that much compared to 1080p gaming?

Because at that resolution CPU will become bottleneck instead of GPU so your RX480/GTX1060 will probably perform like a RX460/GTX1050.

If you plan on upgrading to a freesync monitor next year then I would go with an RX 580. It just released not to long ago basically an rx 480 thats a little bit faster and more power efficient. Also it cost the same as an rx 480.

How much bottleneck will I get? I'm thinking of getting an RX 470 4Gb instead.

save your money and buy an Rx 570

plus 1080p monitor

if you are not upgrading monitor then save even more money and buy an Rx 460. You will be happy with that at 1280x1024 resolution.
