VPS vs Dedicated Server Questions

Okay so this is the background of it. I'm looking to upgrade my game server hosting company but I want to know if I should get a dedicated machine optimized for hosting VMs or not... Now I don't know much about VMs and I just want to know is a VM more efficient, and say if I have 8 gb Ram on a physical machine and I had 2 VMs on it would they both have 8gb Each or would it be 4gb and 4gb. and if it's 4gb what makes it better than the physical with all the 8 tally together.

Just get a vps, cheaper since your not paying for the whole hardware

 

What are you hosting with?

 

8gb and 8 cores on a vps are the same as 8gb and 8 cores on a deticated server.

okay so what I mean is I'm buying a dedicated machine, but I just want to know if I should optimize if for numerous VM environment or just run my server hosting off the machine itself. So if I had a Dedicated Machine would it be better to run VMs on it or just leave it as it's.  

 

and Say I have 5 VMs on one Physical Machine with 8gb would each of those 5 VMs have 8gb or would it be split even among the 5?

if you are running multiple servers at once (which i suppose you will) you have two options:

- make DAMN sure that they cant eat each other's resources (allocate cores, set ram limits, cap hard drive usage, etc.)

- virtualize the living hell out of that setup.

 

that said, i have to say it, if you need to ask this questions owning a game server company probably isnt for you.

Well as right now I'm running off of a small Linux Dedicated Machine and it's good with 8gb Ram, and a good CPU, but I want to upgrade. the Problem is just that I'm not familiar with VPS/VM and I'm just trying to find out if VMs are even worth the while.
