Is the extra $50 or so really worth it to get a WD black drive over a WD blue?

If it's the 7200RPM blue not really. If it's not based on budget I personally would get the blacks or use the money on an SSD

Both the WD Blue and WD Black are great drives, however as far as I know, the WD Blue drives cap out at 1TB for 7200RPM, so if you want a drive larger than that, you'd be best off going with WD Blacks.

I would just look up the failure rate of each. Then again most charts mean nothing. Just go based off recent user reviews. Seagate has gotten better in the past years so I would trust them. I still prefer WD though but that's just me

If you're only talking about the 1TB versions then the only difference between them is the warranty if they're both 7200RPM drives.

The Blue only has a 2 year warranty whereas the Black drives have a 5 year warranty.

If you're talking about 2TB+ capacities then the Blue drives are only offered at 5400RPM and the only way to get a 7200RPM drive is to get a Black, Red, or Gold version of which the Black version is the cheapest.

HGST is owned by WD, but Toshiba makes the 3.5" drives.

 

 

Honestly, if you want to spend more on a HDD, get a larger drive, drive with a faster RPM, a SSHD or get a SSD as well.

Just get a blue. You won't notice the difference. You can also get the Hitachi drives or the segate. All drives are about the same these days.

All drives are fine these days. You won't notice the speed difference. Even my wd reds still get over 150mBps.
