Project: Long distance HDMI

Hi LTT Community

I need to get an HDMI connection approx. 120 M away. We use a hdmi to ethernet adapter on both sides.

The plan was as you see in the image.

Now none of the two cables work so i tried powerline. Wich suprisingly worked to cover the first 40 m for wich i planned to use telephone cable.
Now for some reason this 100m cat5 FTP is dead. I measured it with an ethernet cable tester and as far as it's concerned al 8 wires are connected successful.

But when you try to actually use it for anything else like networking or HDMI signaling it just does not work. not even a single blink on the ports activity LED.

I tried just running a long extension cord and then it works every 5 seconds for 1 second and then it cuts out.

Anyone has any idea how to complete this project?

Maybe the cat5 isn't fast enough. I would try cat5e

Can i ask what you need 140m of HDMI connectivity for?

A home suirveillance camera recorder. We normally just streamed from home to the magazine over internet since we have 2 seperate internet lines but the strain on our network was insane.

if you can get CAT 7 or 6e or 6 cable. (helps with distance)

if you can, NOT IDEAL, is you can use extra switches as signal repeaters to extend the range.

or try find something so use can use a SFP optic cable vs Ethernet.

 

hdmi to eth > switch with SFP port > fiber cable > switch with SFP port > eth to HDMI

Should cutting the cable in the middle and putting a switch there help?

in theory. the reason for limit in length is signal lose over distance, but a switch would provide a fresh signal mid way. the fiber idea sounds cooler to me but adding a switch or 2 is cheaper. advantage with the fiber idea is their is no need for a power source midway (if that is a issue) fiber can do 300m+ easily.

 

EDIT: these HDMI to eth adapters are they design to be able to run though networking equipment like a switch? or is it suppose to be a direct adapter to adapter connection?

Can you link what you were looking at?

 

They can be used over swicthes . It says in the manual and I tested it

can you link the adapter, im interested. That is good that it can do that.

 

so either add switches along the line so keep signal quality good. (assuming going to CAT 7 or 6e does not help) or get 2 cheap/used switches with SFP with  at least 1 SFP port and grab a SFP fiber cable. (I can help you pick something after you find a set of a switches, they can be brand dependent.)

I was looking to see how much fiber would cost for my 2 dell powerconnet 2724 switches (has 2 SFP ports, cost me $40 per on ebay)

each transceiver is $6 ($12 for a pair) (rated for 550m)

the cable is $39.75 for 150m

so it would be $52 for a 150m cable which I think is a very good price.

The fiber idea is in the works, I'll keep you updated.

Should it be possible to extend our entire network over to the second place.
Im discussing it with a man I know who works at my ISP.

Yes but the HDMI thing takes a lot of bandwidth. So I would use 2 fiber lines that are link aggregated together. so the HDMI link has about 1Gbs and the extended lan has another 1Gbs.

I am not sure if it is better to create vlans in the switch to segregate the HDMI to a dedicated fiber line and the other for LAN.

 

I am assuming you just need light lan usages and internet in the remote location so a 1Gbs connection should be enough.

 

You could also go to 10Gbs but that adds a lot of cost to the switches but you would get a very nice lan speed between sites if file transfers is done a lot between them. ($200-$500 a switch, their may be a $100 switch but not sure)
