Like many others here my build has parts rolled over from previous builds. My last 3 rigs have been powered by AMD  processors. I have been happy with the price vs performance.  Here is my current setup.

Mobo: gigabyte 970a-ds3p

CPU: AMD fx 4300 with H100 @4.5ghz

Ram: Corsair vengeance 16gb ddr3

SSD: Corsair force GT 90gb

HDD: 3x 1tb 7200rpm

Psu: Corsair hx750 80+ gold

GPU: Asus strip gtx 980 4gb vram

My monitor is a dell 3007 wfp with 2560x1600 resolution.  I have started to see slowdown in performance with newer titles. Anything under 60fps I think starts becoming unplayable. My rig is 70% gaming and 30% media center. I am ok with shopping used parts. I love bargain hunting on ebay. What would the group consensus be to upgrade/ replace for a $400-500 budget?

AMD upgrade

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 1700 3.0GHz 8-Core Processor  ($317.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock AB350 Pro4 ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($89.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Of these, the Intel build has the edge for games, the AMD build destroys in workstation type applications like Adobe Premiere and the like. It could also become better optimized as time passes and especially when paired with high-end AMD GPUs.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

That edge will likely disappear with 3200 or 3600 MHz memory. The 7700 is 300 MHz slower than the 7700k, which will put it further behind than the 7700k in these benchmarks. Not sure about compatibility, though.

More or less true yeah, Kaby gets ahead when framerate is really really high, say over 100. Still got a smaller edge as the bottleneck is shifted back to the GPU. I bet in 1440p with a 1070 you wouldn't see a difference. Still worth noting I think and it's important to point out that the Ryzen 7 build costs a little more, but you do get twice the number of cores.

I will need a new motherboard also. Better to wait and increase my budget?

This is similar to what I was considering, but I was looking at the 6500k. Thoughts?

6500K? there's no such CPU. You mean i5 6600K or i7 6700K?

Nah if you're not gonna get an Intel i7 you should look into Ryzen imo. Ryzen 5 is 6-core, 12 thread CPUs with pretty good single core performance for $220, or 4 core - 8 thread for $170. Those compete directly with the i7s, not the i5s, for heavy workloads and for gaming on your 980, they'll be just as good as ryzen.

Here's an upgrade for $430. Still overclockable

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor  ($217.98 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty AB350 Gaming K4 ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($102.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  ($109.99 @ Amazon)

That's really not a bad deal. It gives me a good overhaul of my system, and gives me room to grow for a while. I think my gpu has another year or 2 in it before that gets replaced. I've always staggered what I replace so it's not a huge amount of money at once.

Yeah a 980 will probably last you 2 years or more.

I always buy midrange and usually the cards last me a good 5 years, because I don't game on the latest titles at the highest settings.

I've actually got 10 months of my 3 year warranty remaining. With my current setup I had to overclock my cpu to stay at 60fps with fallout 4. With newer more demanding titles I dont see my current rig lasting.

Yeah the truth is the CPU you chose is pretty low performance, this should be quite the upgrade whether it's Kaby Lake or Ryzen

That's part of an almost 4 year old build. At the time it was sufficient for my needs as I was doing more console gaming.

Why the 960 PRO and H105 cooler ? A Samsung 850 EVO and Cryorig H7 would have done the same thing for much less money.
