RX 580 or wait for Vega?

Merkey

Hi, so I want to upgrade my gpu ( currently I have gtx 960 2g) purely for smooth 1080p gaming. Should I wait for Vega or is the rx 580 worth it now?

For purely 1080p gaming you really can't go wrong with a RX580, I would say the Vega line is more for the enthusiastic gamer wanting to go above 1080p.

For reference, I'm using a RX480 for example and can pretty much set everything on high and forget at 1080p (minus some AA settings depending on the game).

I would highly recommend pairing the RX580 with a freesync monitor at a high refresh rate and you'll have a solid gaming experience for 1080p no doubt about it.

RX 580 is a really good value for mid range budgets.  From what we know about Vega, it will be more high end.  For 1080p 60hz monitor, the RX 580 is a really good choice.

Can you afford a 1070? If not, get an Rx 580 because Vega will be in the 1070 and up price range.

Lemme give my input:

RX 580> GTX 1060

The 580 is perfectly good for 1080p, you don't need more.

Vega will be more of a GTX 1080 contender, as such costing more and (IMO kinda being overkill). You probs don't need it.

Custom pinewood case, Corsair CX 600WRampage 3 Extreme, i7 980x (@4.2ghz) with ML240 Cooler MSI GTX 970, 24gb DDR3, 240gb OCZ Tr150 SSD + 2Tb Seagate Baracuda.

Advocate for used/older hardware. Also one of the resident petrol heads.

Isn't 1070 overkill for 1080p?

It is. However, if you can afford it I would recommend you to get it cause games are only gonna get more and more demanding. The 1070 will remain (usable/good) for longer, saving you money in the long run.

No it's not. I have a GTX 1070 and 1080p60hz monitor. I also had a 1060 6GB but I sold it.

In new demanding games like Dishonored 2, Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Watch Dogs 2 I have to lower settings to get stable 60FPS. Some older games can also be too demanding if I use heavy anti-aliasing like MSAA or SSAA.

Have anyone here tried Gigabyte RX 580? This is the only gpu available in our country as of the moment. I've been hearing about  RX 580 high power consumption and high temps. Is this something i need to worry about?

No not really, temps have allways been good in my case and PSU is...Ok. I don't plan to buy it now, thats why I don't know if I should wait for vega

  • 2 weeks later...

Personally I'm waiting for Vega so that I can run my Freesync 1080p 144hz smoothly with most games at a nice level of detail.

I would have purchased an RX 580 shortly after launch but most people who had 144hz monitors that were 1080p or higher resolutions reported that they had to drop their detail levels quite a bit.  So since my monitor is Freesync, I'm waiting for Vega.

Seriously wish Gsync monitors were more competitively priced.

I have the Gigabyte (non-Aorus) 4GB RX 580. I oc'd it to 1410Mhz stable with no voltage adjustment yet. Max temp when running Unigine Valley is 64C. Max power draw as I read in GPUZ is about 160-170W. Seems like pretty good numbers to me considering it only cost me $270 CAD before tax

To O/P: RX 580 is more than enough for 1080p, although in some games you have to turn settings down 1 notch (high instead of very high) to get frames above 60-70 fps.

I play Resident evil 7 at 1440p on that card, everything pretty much set at high except shadows and AA, and I average about 80-100 fps. and my monitor is 144hz and has FreeSync so it is very smooth

I have no doubt that the RX 580 will net you constant 60 fps on AAA games at 1080p if you don't go batshit crazy in the graphics settings for settings that cost a lot of performance but result in minimal graphical difference.
