yes i do, is that the thing i need to put the thermal paste on?

Sort of. Honestly unless you really need the PC right now, I would wait for your friend to come back. It seems he bailed on you without finishing. Without a cooler the PC was in no shape to be turned on yet.

On the back of your motherboard so you can put the fan on

He doesn't need one for a stock cooler.

Did you see the pic? There's no cooler on at all. That's why it's shutting off and freaking out, it's overheating.

back plate on what

Some aftermarket coolers use a backplate. If you're just using the stock Intel cooler like the one in the pic by Brownie a few posts up, don't worry about it.

Kind of a crap friend... should have finished the PC or at least told you not to turn it on yet!

Anyways assuming you have the stock intel cooler here's a quick guide on how to install it. Do a dot of thermal paste on the CPU just like this guy.

After you do what you see in the video, connect the cable coming off the cooler to the CPU_Fan header on the motherboard. Check the motherboard's manual if you can't find it.

Okay make sure that it clicked all the way into place and is sturdy. If that's all good connect the cable to the CPU_Fan plug on the motherboard and try starting it up again.
