Hello,

I do want to upgrade my MI GT780DXR but I hit a wall trying to figure out the avliabiliies of what can be done.

Current setup:

i7-2670;

nVidia GTX570M (3gb)

DDR 3 1333 2x4 gigs

2xWD scorpio black 500GB in RAID0

I do want to get an SSD (Samsung 840EVO 250gb probably), but I cant findout what sata conectors i have (3 or 6 gbs).. Will the connector be a bottleneck?

Or maybe its even possible to put this SSD instead of optical drive (haven't used it yet in 2 years) as I will not be using it in RAID aanyway?

Second thing - I need a lot  more RAM (some programs i use needs it a lot). Planning on getting a kit 2x8gb to populate the 2 remaining slots. I suppose there will be no problem that i use 2x4g and 2x8 gb?

Main problem - cant get a PC as I have to travel a lot, so the only option is to upgrade this laptop :/

Thanks in advance :)

@bigudukaz

The stuff you named is pretty much all you can do.

I wouldn't connect the SSD in the DVD drive slot, as this will most likeley be a slower standard.

With the main drive slots it doesn't really matter much, if they are 3 or 6 Gbit/S, a SSD in there will be fast anyways.

What you can put into your DVD slot though is an additional battery pack if you can find a compatible one.

Mixing RAM can cause instability up to not working at all. If i was you I'd sell the 2x4, or just keep it, and run only the 2x8 GB sticks.

Other than that there is sadly not much you can do to upgrade your laptop. Buy canned air to blow out the dust and clean all the surfaces with isopropyl alcohol. Then it will be fresher again. :D dunno xD

who cares...

Would a 2 sets of 2x8 ram cause instability as well? Because in the future i would like to have max ram (32gigs) as working with huge photo files it would help a lot. Probably i will put an HDD instead of optical because i will change one to SSD anyway and it will just be laying around (i dont plan on using it as external drive).

If the RAM is identical (check serial number) two of those kits (total of 4 sticks) should run fine, as long as your laptop supports it, which i suppose it does. :D

You do have two slots for 2.5" drives don't you? Keep one scorpio in for mass storage and just change the main drive to that SSD. Run them seperatley (not in Raid) and it should work fine.

who cares...

Its good that I have asked before buying it :) Maybe in time i will put second SSD and put them in RAID0, but probably the advantage will be marginal.

RAM problem still stays - cant put 2 sticks of 4 gigs, as it might be unstable, so i will just have to change the current ones to 8 gig and later add 2 more... or save some money to get 4 sticks of 8 at the same time.

Thanks for the help :)
