System specs:

Old CPU: Pentium 2020m      New CPU: I5-3320m

RAM: 8GB ddr3

GPU: intel hd (no discrete graphics card)

Right, so i am making my old Toshiba satellite C55-A-1HL into a minecraft machine for my little brother. I did some research and found this i5 on the same socket, when i put the new CPU in it boots up normally but after 30-40 mins it shuts off, this is consistent across multiple operating systems and when i put the old cpu back in this issue isn't there. What do you guys think this is? all help is appreciated! :-)

Thanks for reading

It's quite possible that your board can't handle extra power needed for the Core i5.

wouldn't it fail to post in the first place if it was power related? this happens when the computer is at idle too

PSU brick ( watt)?

heat?

laptop cpu upgraded is not recommended, laptops have a thermal and temperature limit.

no wattage on the power brick, its says 19v and 3.42A and there are no thermal issues both chips have the same TDP

19v times 3.42A is 65 watt so you have a 65W power brick.

reinstall windows?

it sounds like a hardware issue, do you usually plug in your laptop.

Maybe the board wasn't made for the core i5 you installed, or maybe the included power brick can't handle it.

Is the TDP of your new CPU higher than that of your old CPU? If so, that could be why. // Edit: Nevermind. Apparently I can't read today.

I would also be interested in any odd event logs.

The laptop posts and a stress test is running, would it boot even if unsupported?

Just because it's not officially supported doesn't mean it wouldn't POST. It could just be unstable for all we know.
