Normal to download things slower than your internet speeds?

Hello, thank you for taking the time and reading this.

 

 Basically, I am downloading Far Cry 4 (Thank you for everyone who recommended me this game, at $12, I think it was worth the money), anyways, I see that I'm downloading the game at 8MB/s. Which I guess, is slow. I think this because my internet speeds are supposed to be 60 mbps downloads. I even took a speedtest while downloading and they said the same. Any ideas if this is normal?

I'm assuming this is a megabits vs megabytes issue. Isps advertise speeds in megabits ie 60megabits per second. However your game download is measured in megabytes per second. 60 megabits per second is equal to 7.5 megabytes per second. So realistically you are getting a little bit more than you paid for.

You're actually getting all that you can. 61Mbps more or less equals 8MB/s.

and 60mbps is around 8MBps

simple math dude .. .100 mbps = 100 mega bits per second = 100 million bits ... there's 8 bits in a byte ... so you have 100 / 8 = 12.5 million bytes  ...

 

When you store data on hard drives, computers use multiples of 1024 instead of 1000 , so 1 KiB = 1024 bytes , 1 MiB = 1024 KiB and so on 

 

So a 100 mbps internet connection can give you a maximum theoretical speed of 12.500.000 bytes / 1024 / 1024 = 11.92 MiB per second .. just round it up to 12 MiB/s for easy math.

 

So 60 mbps is 6 out of 10  out of 12 MiB , or 12 * 0.6 = 7.2 MiB /s

 

If you're downloading at 8 MiB/s, you're actually downloading at faster speeds than your Internet plan.
