Kaby lake in poopy generic LGA 1151 motherboard?

Can it be done or does it HAVE to be a Zed board?

Z-boards are good choices if you expect to get a K-series CPU or you want some of the features that only a Z-board can offer.

No, you don't need a Z-board for Kaby Lake. You just need to make sure the BIOS is compatible.

Agreed, but will it still work though? I have a friend who wants to get a 7700k and a Z270 board, but can only afford 1 or the other, I told him to get the CPU first, then the board and overclock it later, but right now he has a crappy board that came in a really old dell pre built.

Overclocking will only work with a K-series CPU (though there are exceptions) with a Z-board and the best performance comes from it. He can still use the board he has for now.

Going to be blunt, but that is just stupid.

not only will he be spending money (he could be saving) on a shitty motherboard. He would then have to disassemble the system, install a new nicer motherboard and then put it all back together again.

Tell him to save his money until he can afford both. Or get the 6600k, it performs just as well in most day to day tasks.

You misunderstand, he already has the poopy motherboard, he will be getting a Z270 later, as I said in the main post.... he can ONLY buy 1 right now, I told him there's no point in buying the Z270 board now as he only has a 6700 which can't be overclocked. So I suggested he get the 7700k now, and even though it won't be able to be overclocked yet, he'll at least have it to use, until he can get his Z270 board.

Now I re-ask the question. Will it WORK? I don't care how stupid it sounds, or how inefficient it is, I'm aware, I want to know if it will WORK. Like physically will it turn on, power up and be usable.
