Hello,

I am in the market for a new laptop that would be very capable of financial modeling. I will be doing most of the work through excel and possibly some other programs. I have heard that the thinkpad's are the best bet for their price. It needs to be around a 15" screen as well as have the page up and down keys around the arrow keys. If possible, my budget is between $500-$1200. Do you all have any recommendations?

Thank you for all the help!!

What type of hardware do you need.

I'd you want a good overall laptop I'd get the Dell e5480. It's there eqv of the thinkpad and I'd say it's better. If you want a quadro I'd get a e3520. The thinkpad eqv of these are the t470.

If you just want a cheap system with a quad core and gpu look at the Dell inspiron 15 gaming.

From everything I have heard, I am probably going to need a quad-core processor and I would like a larger (15") screen. Other than that I am not too picky. Thank you!

how advanced are you in financial modeling? intro financial modeling you dont need jack shit, but more advanced with many tabs and links and reliance on external addins and software puts a heavy load on your system. especially if your work is advanced enough to reach row limitations and external functionality needs. solid quad core is good enough for intro. something like the E5470 is good. or the T460p. get them on thinkpad/dell outlet (online store) or ebay refurbs.

Not extremely advanced but that is why I am getting the laptop. I want to get more into it.

I found a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2nd gen with i7 processor (dual core) for $500. Do you think that would be better for the $ than spending $900 for a T460p with a quad-core processor?

for 500. Nope. Look on Dell Outlet E5470 if you want a cheap quad core business laptop. There are some in the 600-700 ranges and I think they're more both it than a duo core. 900 seems a tad high if you're looking to get a good deal.
