MacBook?

Longtime Windows user here (as in the first to the last PC I've touched had windows on it with the exception of my server, which is running ubuntu).

 

I recently noticed, that my school offers a 12% (-ish) discount on apple products (they somehow partnered with apple, so you are buying from the apple store, but at a discount). And since I have been looking for a laptop to take to school I was wondering if getting a macbook was worth it? I've heard great things about them, especially when it comes to productivity and the likes.

 

Any suggestions are welcome ^^

If that discount applies to refurbished current gen or 2015 Macbooks go for it.  Otherwise, the %12 off still doesn't bring it into the same price bracket as an XPS 15

YES!!! Macs are great laptops. Even if you decide you hate macOS, just set up BootCamp and run Windows. It runs super smooth and is better than some of my Dad's "actual" PCs (due to the higher end hardware).

If you are a long time Windows User I wont recomend buying a Macbook. IOS is such a weird thing (eg there is no real left click) .Even with the discount, there are Laptops with better performance and lower price.

It actually depends on your use-case scenario. In my school right now, we use Windows much more often than and other OS, so it technically is not that wise of an idea to get a MacBook, only to have to install Windows alongside your macOS, because you still have to do more work when you get your laptop. I'm working part-time at the IT Helpdesk of my school now, people occasionally come up to me and ask what kind of laptop they should get, I always tell them to get a Windows machine unless their course of study requires a Mac. So whether to get a Mac or not is more or less based on your use-case scenario.

I'm a long windows user and have a windows desktop - I wont go back to a windows laptop from my MacBook pro

long-time windows user who just got a 2015 retina macbook pro for general daily use at work... ITS AMAZING I LOVE IT.

for my high end workload I will always use my main windows desktop for raw power but for more mainstream regular use, this macbook is the best laptop ive ever owned.

half the stuff that makes Macbooks good, don't apply on Windows. trackpad, goes to shit. Windows trackpad beats it. Functions, go to shit. The new touch bar thingy, doesn't work. Optimus/Enduro, doesn't work. battery life goes to shit (especially on the ones with a dGPU). If you're going to get a Windows laptop, get a Windows laptop.

Seems to work well on my 2012 MBP. The trackpad isn't as smooth as when it's running Mac, but it never has been on any other PC I've used. Mine doesn't have the touch bar, so no problem there. I haven't noticed terrible battery life, but then I don't expect a PC to have as much battery life. I understand the high end, MacBook Pro level PCs will perform better, but they can only run Windows. With the Mac, you still keep macOS for its security advantages and interface (if you like it better), but can run your games in Windows. Or Office, as it's not that good on Mac. Also, Macs generally have a higher resale value if they're in good condition. Bear in mind, I don't have any experience with high end laptops like the Surface Book, XPS 13, etc.

do you have a dGPU? and also windows precision is way better than mac on windows.

Nope. Just the i5s iGPU.

I hope no one is listening to you with this comment. 1) Macbooks don't run IOS they run MACOS so that is the first problem. 2) There is a left and a right click it is a check box in the settings.

 

Please get facts right before posting.

It has the proper drivers. It recognizes the CPU and iGPU correctly, and even installed the Intel graphics control panel automatically, like my dad's Windows laptops with i5s and i3s. And it performs better than any of our other laptops on RealFlight G5, an R/C flight sim, even though it sucks at benchmarks. Though it's still whupped by my desktop.

They're only bad for gaming but I think they have versions with Nvidia cards now. Other than that, they will last you for college and graduate school and you might even be abel to sell it after all those years, people actually buy old macbooks like hot cakes.
