<$200 cpu NO overclocking

I'm having a hard time deciding which CPU to get for <$200 so I figured I hear from the specialists. I'm not overclocking. I won't be recording or streaming, only gaming. The games I typically play are relatively cpu intensive (Arma 3, The Forest, Emulators, etc etc).

Which cpu would you recommend and why? Please link some references or sources to back up your explanations. Trying to weed out the fanboys...

Thanks in advance :)

Approx $80. Can you please explain your reasoning for choosing the Ryzen 5 with sources? Lot of hype right now...

For gaming, Ryzen isn't the best choice. OP should get something like an i5-7400/7500 and a cheap B250 motherboard.

For gaming, a Skylake or Kaby Lake 6400/7400 i5 is your best option. Ryzen pukes out threads like crazy, but Intel's latest CPUs still have stronger IPC, and games aren't really optimized yet to take advantage of Ryzen's threads. If your primary goal was editing, rendering, streaming, anything like that, a Ryzen 5 chip would be a damn fine choice. For straight-up gaming rigs, Intel is still king.

Thanks :) Would you recommend a i5 7600k even if I'm not overclocking? I ask because the i5 7500 has been recommended to me since I'm not overclocking, but the 7600k bas clock is higher than the 7500. I'm really confused.

If you're going for a 7600k a 1600 or 1600x would be a better option honestly.

A 7600K, no. You're paying a premium for the processor, then you have to turn around and pay more for a cooler because the 7600K doesn't come with one. A 7600, maybe. It depends on price. The 6500 and 7500 are considered sweet-spot processors because they're the best marriage of performance and price amongst current i5 CPUs. That said, the 6400 got low enough in price for a while there that it was very competitive, and the 7400 might be at that point now.

In real world terms, you aren't going to see much of a difference between a 7500 and a 7600K run at stock clocks. Certainly not enough to justify the added cost of the CPU and an aftermarket cooler if you're not going to overclock.

The tech community probably EXPLODED today with Ryzen 5, since it came out today. I don't feel like looking through videos to see which ones go in-depth, just look up Ryzen 5 review on YouTube.

Which is exactly why I'm staying away from Ryzen 5 youtube videos. I know the game, hype it up, link to store, etc... Plus I don't feel comfortable buying something that released.... today.... Also, how many motherboards are compatible with Ryzen and still affordable compared to an intel? Im actually curious.

Look up motherboards on PCPartPicker. As for the CPUs themselves, we know that they are (so far) better for tasks that take advantage of Ryzen's threads, such as video editing and rendering. But since Intel has higher IPC, their CPUs are better for gaming. Another advantage of Intel is you have lots more parts to chose from that are Intel compatible (well, mostly motherboards are special, but whatever, you get my point).

So it seems like Ryzen isn't the way to go for my use case. I won't be overclocking and I won't be needing all those threads. So now I'm torn between the i5 7500 and the i5 7600k. Is there much of a difference?
