Not 100% sure, but I think the 7600k is just an unlocked 7500. If I were you, though, I would go for the 7600k. I know you said you aren't overclocking, may I ask why? It's better performance per dollar to overclock. Another option is to get a 6700 (I left out the "k" on purpose) and a B150 or H110 motherboard, if you can afford it.

Which is exactly why I'm staying away from Ryzen 5 youtube videos. I know the game, hype it up, link to store, etc... Plus I don't feel comfortable buying something that released.... today.... Also, how many motherboards are compatible with Ryzen and still affordable compared to an intel? Im actually curious.

You can check out Anandtech, they're good as always.

The thing is, even so I'd suggest a 1600. If you looked at the review I linked, while Ryzen trails in averages, it wins in mins, which are arguably more important. That's not to mention if you ever do get into multi thread workloads it'll really crush, and games will only get more multi threaded.

I mean you can get the i5 7500 for around 165$ off jet... so. if you're just going to game... this is solid

Won't be going into multithreaded workloads. Just gaming.

I personally don't feel comfortable overclocking. I have terrible luck with hardware so i never want to push it... ever. Plus, I'm worried about overheating and dont want to fork over extra for a serious cooler. I just feel more comfortable going with stock. I'm dead set on this.

If the 7600k is just an unlocked 7500, why is the base clock speed different?

Just now, oPryzeLP said:

But the thing is, even if you are just gaming Ryzen 5 is a compelling option. There's a reason GN recommends a 1600/x over the i5s.

Pros for Ryzen:

-more cores (and so better multi core performance)

-better upgradibility in the future (due to am4 being a platform that will be updated until 2020)

-better minimums in games

-In 3 years or so will probably start beating out the i5 in nearly everything

Pros for i5s

-better single threaded performance

-better averages

See what I'm saying?

Now, if you plan on upgrading in two years and play games that favor Intel (such as GTA V) then I won't argue with an i5.

But the thing is, in my opinion minimums are more important than averages. And on average, Ryzen has better minimums, due to the i5 sometimes getting almost maxed out in CPU usage. Games like Civ VI show just how Ryzen will probably end up like compared to Intel in 3 years or so.

If you want a more "future-proof" option Ryzen is the way to go. No contest.

If you plan on only having it for 2 years or so, and play titles that favor Intel, then fine, a 7600k is fine.

Note though if you're looking at the 7600k+B250 mobo I'd still strongly suggest going for a 6700+H110 mobo. It's about the same price and faster.

It is? From what I can see, the i7 6700 is much more expensive at $290.

I get your point about future proofing, but that typically doesn't outright convince me because circumstances always change and technology always evolves. I'm betting against AMD's track record when compared to intel. I understand they just released a new cpu today, which is why I'm really not comfortable picking it up right away. Like I said, I have bad luck with hardware. All things considered, I feel more comfortable going with an intel rig because I need that single core performance for emulating games and cpu intensive stuff. I DON'T need it for multithreading or editing.

I appreciate all the replies on this thread! I've learned a lot and I think I've made my decision. 7500 for me :):)

i7 6700:     $293 + $45 = $338

Hmmm, you've given me something to think about.

going to throw my 2 cents in. Ryzen 1600 is a 6 core 12 thread cpu that IN GAMING loses 2-7 fps on OVERCLOCKED i5 7600k but does EVERYTHING  a cpu should do better than an i5 7600k. on many games the i5 is pegged at 100% leaving no headroom where a 1600 has plenty to spare for the next 3 years. anyone for any use case is doing their self an injustice by buying a i5 at this point IMHO.

*AM4 platform will be viable and UPGRADABLE with a better CPU for many years. Intel chipset is dead next year

* Running background processes irw cases and gaming at the same time is a win for Ryzen

* Ryzen will continue to improve as it is a new platform. Intel will not for the next year and a half

* losing a few fps is only a thing if you are gaming 1080p with a GPU higher than a 1070 as 1070 and below you will be mostly gpu bound.

* use cases can easily change but cpu's can not

TLDR currently anything below an i7 on a new build should be a Ryzen chip as it is simply a better CPU all around period and as game architecture is changing 8 threads will increasingly become important which is why many use i7 chips today, so when asked " help me chose between a 4 core 4 thread and a 6 core 12 thread cpu with a trivial loss of fps on some games or none at all if gaming on a 1070 or below or at 60hz monitor, the choice is pretty easy. all i5 chips are dead to me on this architecture.

The only case where this changes is if you are competitive  gaming at 144hz 1080p in which case you MAY want to buy a i7 7700k with a 1080 ti for its better frames. any budget build i5 at this point simply should be Ryzen

Nope, i am not an AMD fanboy. I am simply stating the obvious
