Hello,

I'm wishing to build a good PC and I thought about why not put a non-sata SSD on it, for it to be faster...

But I have a problem with this : my SSD is a M.2 format, and I only have one M.2 slot on my motherboard. And I'm willing to use it to put an Intel Optane on it !

So the question is simple : to be or not to be ?   Can I put my SSD stick on a PCIe port on my motherboard or am I screwed ?

Here are the expensions slot on the board :

  1. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16)
    * For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16 slot.
  2. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x4 (PCIEX4)
  3. 2 x PCI Express x1 slots
  4. (All of the PCI Express slots conform to PCI Express 3.0 standard.)
  5. 2 x PCI slots
  1. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16)

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-Z270-HD3P...

Thank you !

PS : Sorry for my poor English... I'm French xD

PS : already posted this in the HDD, SSD topic but still no answer =/

You can, you just need a converter card to do it.

just get an adapter like the one above, and you should be able to install the M.2 drive in a PCIe slot!

You could use an adapter, though I would be careful about putting your hopes up for optane since it's not a very good sign when Intel is comparing them to HDDs...

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Hello, Do I get the same performance (or almost) with an adapter ? Is there gonna be a real improvement compared to SATA ?

For the Intel Optane... L'espoir fait vivre ! as we say in French ( Faith make live... doesn't seem as right in English =/ )

Thanks you !
