The i-85 Bridge Collapse

Soooooo, i'm over a week late o this, but I guess this is interesting? Anyways, last thursday there was a huge fire on a giant highway in Atlanta, or Interstate 85. Here is how it goes.

 

The Department of Transportation has been storing things under this bridge for years, with no seen threats whatsoever, or so they thought. Back to last thursday. Three people, who are now in custody, were high on crack under the bridge. They wanted to light a fire, so they lit some plastic, somehow.

The fire got really big

 

and really hot

 

and it melted steel beams that were holding together the upper portion of the bridge

So then it collapsed. Yay, lot of traffic.

What a frakkin mess... rode at Stone Mountain on Saturday, ick. Drive across the top of the perimeter was not great going, sucked coming back and I was going to goto the last Gladiator game for the year which was back over the top. This necessitated, getting home... bringing bike in, showering... and getting back on the road again as traffic was getting even worse. Going to VIR Thursday and figured I would sleep in until 0530.. get on the road about 0600... nope, much heavier than normal this morning across the top before 0630 so its up at 0500. Oh well, at least I get to play with #racecar.

that bridge has pillars made of reinforced concrete that seem to be supporting the steel above. this probably helped find a engineering issue  though to i would think the original pillars would still be standing after the fire odd.
