Issues with video editing in OpenShot Video Editor

AlTech

I've been experiencing a painful amount of lag whilst using OpenShot video editor.

The program would lock up and crash if I do anything such as trim a video file or attempt to play a section of video significantly ahead of what it was just playing (e.g. trying to start playing from 7:12 instead of from the start of the video).

Relevant Specs:

Intel core i5-4570 @ 3.2GHz (4 cores and 4 threads) with Turbo Boost to 3.6GHz.

GeForce GTX 770 2GB (I'm fairly certain this is not the bottleneck or issue in editing)

16B DDR3-1600 RAM (I know fast ram like 2133MHz is good but my CPU doesn't support DDR4 and i'm not gonna buy new DDR3 sticks in 2017).

I know that the CPU usage spikes whenever I manipulate the video in the video editor. I'm fairly certain that my CPU shouldn't be causing this considering that core i7 CPUs with 8 threads would have no issue and I'm fairly certain that it should still be usable on a quad core CPU.

The videos I work with and the project settings are 1080p 60fps videos.

The file I was just working with is 5Mbit/s bitrate and is a 2GB file.

So, is this OpenShot's faut? Is this par for the course on my CPU?

Do I need to buy a new CPU to edit 1080p 60fps videos? (with Hitfilm I was doing just fine until HitFilm decided to stop working :()

Any advice is welcome.

I edit with Magix Edit on my i5 haswell 4460 just fine, no issues at all.

1080p60fps. I did try 4K in the past everything is also smooth

I know you are not suppose to advertise YT channel here but for the sake of helping people I think should be fine

Yeah your 770 is not a bottleneck, the video I linked was when I still had a GTX 760

All on my HDD too

So try reinstalling the program

I'll try re-installing it now.

This appears to be a somewhat poorly documented issue.......

Are you using Linux? Kdenlive is quite good.

I'm mainly using Windows but I occasionally run Linux.
