Hi everybody, First post.

Just wondering how difficult is it to install a GPU? I'm a complete Noob and this is my first gaming pc, its due for delivery soon and I am looking to install a AMD 7990, there will be no Pin plugs going to it.

Is there anything i need to watch out for? or should it be fairly straight forward if i follow a video?

Thanks,

So, I just switched from a Mac...

It is probobly the second easiest part to install. Just be careful with it and don't force it in.

If i ordered it without a graphics card will it matter if i don't boot it up before installing? or should i boot up download the drivers first?

If i'm using the dvi plug for the monitor, will it still display the imagine ? or should i use the mobo to install the drivers then swap?

Thankss.

You have remove PCi-e slot covers on your case (the 2nd and 3rd)to put it into the first PCI-e x16 slot on your board (usually the second slot, first is very short (PCI-e x1) and the second is very long (x16), that's where you put it), push on it firmly until you hear it lock into place, then secure it with the screws you removed when you removed the slot covers. Then just power it with 2 PCI 8-pin connectors.

Do all this with your PSU unplugged from the wall and ground yourself.

What do you mean by "there will be no Pin plugs to it' ???? a 7990 needs external power from a PSU via 6/8 pin PCI-e connectors otherwise it won't run. You also need to make sure your PSU can deliver enough power for your system with the new GPU.

Actually you should make sure that you don't do this in a carpet area and ground yourself. Check if your PSU has enough power to supply that hardware before you install it.

Talking about a 7990 you should have at least 650 Watts Bronze power.

Unplug the rig and open up the side panel of your computer. Usually use the first PCIe slot. Next step is put the card carefully in the machine until you feel the click of the lock in the back of the slot. Make sure that you have the I/O not pushed towards the mainboard.

Then assemble the machine and plug it in. When windows is booted ( I assume you use a windows platform) it will detect the new hardware. All you have to do from that point on wait until the software is downloaded and enjoy the card :) .

As important note on the side: Please take your time, never install hardware in a rush!

Welcome to the forum :) .

If your CPU has an integrated GPU and your mobo has a DVI plug, then you will be able to use your computer. Otherwise not and you'll have to wait for your GPU to arrive. The GPU will be able to work with basic applications, but games won't work. For that you'll have to download drivers. Just make sure you have enough power avaliable. 7990 is a BEAST.

Got a 850W power supply so it should be enough, Everything is due to arrive early December... the only thing i need is a monitor...

I'm usually pretty swtiched on when it comes to tech but I just wanted to to what to look out for any common mistakes.. After all, how hard can it be ?  :P

It isn't hard at all to install RAM or a graphics card. When it comes down to put a CPU in its socket this is a little bit more tricky or replacing a standard heatsink of a GPU.

And 850W PSU is just fine for this particular card no problem.
