Upgrading PC specs, need some help

Hi.

If you go to my profile and check out my specs you can see they're pretty old. I've already decided with GPU I'm getting (GTX 1080).

I haven't been keeping up on CPU's and things like that though. I want to at least get 6 core i7, socket 2011-3, then I assume I'm going to need to get DDR4 ram right? What's best right now? Should I wait for something? Is intel coming out with something new soon? (I am not interested in AMD).

Also, if you have any suggestions for an air cooler for the CPU, I'd like to hear it. It will probably be under heavy load during gaming.

Thanks.

Get a 1700

ryzen 1700 + some b350 MOTHERBOARd

x99 platform will probably be dead by 2018 in terms of upgradability

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

I said in the post that I'm not interested in AMD.

Gaming, coding, debugging code. I want the best there is right now, or is going to be soon. But not an intel extreme CPU (since the prices are usually crazy, but I'm open to it if they aren't).

X299 is coming soon, wait for that if you're not interested in AM4 from AMD

Any idea what the prices might be for the X299 CPUs?

Well I mean there aren't any 6 cores that aren't amd and aren't extreme edition CPUs.

If you're gaming and coding a quad core is enough.

I know a quad core is enough. I have one right now. But in a few years a 6 core would probably be beneficial. Since I don't upgrade my PC often at all, I want to get something that lasts for a while. I did see one 6 core LGA 2011-3 CPU that isn't an extreme edition. I only don't want an extreme edition since they're over $1K. 6 core I saw was about half of that.

Do you mean extreme edition with an X or just X99?

Both the 5820k and 6800k cost $400 or so.

Honestly though Ryzen gives you more cores for less...

The ones with an X are really expensive, I'm going for X99. Also, AMD has always had processors with a ton of cores but they performed badly. I've been using Intel for years and it's always worked great and been reliable. You get what you pay for, and I have no problem paying a bit more for Intel.

Ryzen's IPC is around Haswell level. AMD just has managed to really suck for the past 10 years :D.

In any multi threaded task that doesn't heavily favor Intel Ryzen will beat Intel any day. But for more single threaded apps in general Intel is 5-10% ahead.

I've looked into this and compared the prices. The Z270 board + i7 7700K actually sounds really good. Is there anything that's coming this year for the main 4 core line? Was thinking about upgrading around August.
