my front audio jack is not working on my HAF 912 case my motherboard is the msi z170a gaming m5, i have enabled the audio jack in the realtek software i have increased the volume on everything but nothing seems to be working, i built the computer myself and plugged in every possible cable

have already looked at the manual the HD audio cable is plugged into the right spot as there is no AC 97 header at all on the case so i am not sure what is going on here.

Is your primary output sound device "Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio). When you plug in your audio device and realtek prompts you through the audio setup, did you set all the correct options?

First thing I would do is double and triple check that your front I/O connectors are plugged into the right header and oriented correctly.  I dont know about your case, but when I built my PC I initially had an issue with my power button because I got confused by the manual and plugged it in upside down.  Make sure you consult both your MoBo manual and the manual that came with your tower to make absolutely sure those are connected properly.

After that, the only other thing I would think about checking before assuming the connector is defective is your audio "playback" device.  I don't know why it would, but it might be that the front connector is recognized separately from the back I/O - i.e. one might be listed under "Speakers" while the other is listed under "Headphones".  A lot of times, windows assumes which device you want as default and you have to manually change it.  For instance, if I were to disconnect and reconnect my main monitor, my system automatically makes the monitor audio output my default as soon as it recognizes it again.  Even if my headphones are plugged in the entire time and set to default, it still switches the output and I have to manually change it to get audio back to my headphones.

i have spent hours looking at the manual about 2 days ago it is plugged in correctly considering i have tried several times both ways as well so there is no other way i can put it on, as well as me wanting to manually put activate either my headphones or speakers because i want to leave my headphones plugged in so i can switch it i dont want it to be default if it isn't my default speaker system, and i have tried manually putting it is default just to make sure but i dont want it as default, my last computer all i had to do was plug it in my headphones and it automatically switched to the headphones i had in so i dont see what the problem is here beside faulty front panel

I think I understand what you're saying about the speakers and headphones. But, as I referenced above, the fact is that your system has an internal priority list of which devices are set to default by default based on whether they are plugged in or not. Your old computer obviously had this feature connected with the audio jack. I'm sure if you plugged a pair of speakers into that same jack on your old setup it would auto-detect those too.

Don't pay so much attention to what the "playback" device is called. Its just a name for the output it is detecting.

Also, quick question... was your last computer a laptop with built in speakers by chance? If not, what audio output did you're old setup switch FROM when you plugged in the headphones?

as i have stated before in this thread i have tried the above solution it did not work, i have also as stated above unplugged my speakers from my computer in the back panel and plugged in my headphones in the front and nothing still works

also a quick note when my speakers are also plugged in in the back and i plug in my headphones in the front nothing plays out the headphones AND nothing plays out the speakers and nothing is registered as playing through the speakers but is registered as playing through the headphones with no sound still
