amd more stable than nvidia?

So, I have this testing platform that i'm using to compare 2 graphics cards just for the heck of it. I have an AMD Firepro W7000, and an EVGA GTX 960 SSC. Other than the graphics card, the only thing that changes is the hard drive, and the two hard drives that i'm using are literally the exact same. 

 

the rest of the build is this. 

CPU: i7-870 quad core @ 2.93 ghz (it's old but it's what i'm using right now)

RAM: 8gb kingston ddr3 1333mhz

powersupply: corsair CX600

 

i've provided the specs that i think are important, but if you need other information just ask.

 

all background info aside, the nvidia platform has some serious issues. I continually have BSOD issues and games don't wanna run properly. The system freezes when doing basic tasks or when starting up a game. I have all the proper drivers and such installed, i made sure of that. 

 

However, the AMD platform is perfectly fine. I've never had a BSOD, games run just fine, I can actually open up google chrome without the whole system bugging out. 

 

Am I doing something extremely wrong that I don't know about? Or should I just reinstall windows and try again?

Reinstall Windows or use DDU. 

 

Both vendors are stable as can be, but welcome to the PC community where you have 1000s of variables but only one will be accounted for.

well, I guess that means I'll be reinstalling windows on my nvidia platform then?

Do you frequently replace the GPUs? Is there a boot drive for each?

Exactly this, no hardware, no brand, no model is completely immune to problems, there some better than others sure but all will give someone a headache at some time, nVidia and AMD are pretty much equal nowadays in what comes to system stability, tomorrow there will be someone with the exact opposite title "nVidia more stable than AMD" going the same way "All my previous nVidia cards rocks, bought a powercolor rx480 and it sux so AMD must suck"....

 

Well, DDU before changing GPUs is a must, especially if you're going with a different brand.

Each GPU has it's own boot drive, because I didn't want to have to mess with drivers every single time i rebooted with a new graphics card. And yes, I do switch the cards quite often, depending on what i'm doing it could be as soon as every 5 - 15 minutes.

What programs do you use? Are you using Solidworks or AutoDesk? Adobe CS?

no, and honestly, I'm seeing which one runs simple things better. such as overwatch. that's the one that nvidia seems to be having the most issues about.

and I wasn't meaning to dis nvidia. I really like nvidia, but i didn't know what to expect from this testing I'm doing. It's all super basic stuff too, like i describe earlier. I'm not doing any stress tests, because those already exist and I can just google it if i want. I'm just seeing which one is going to be better for me on a day to day basis. I think...

 

I'm honestly not sure what i'm doing. I think i'm just screwing around with hardware at this point and I noticed something odd on the nvidia side of things.

You should be using a clean disk each time, otherwise bloat may affect the results of whatever it is you're doing.

Well that is the thing though... You shouldn't mess up with hardware just for fun, the more you mess around with it the easier to get a problem... imagine you switching drives and gpu's and all so often, there are people who'll not even reboot their PCs to "not break the operating system" and you're doing it just for "fun" haha...

dang, that sounds like a lot more work than I would like to do at this point. And for all intents and purposes, i'm just messing around. I think the super unstable nvidia junk is just an anomaly that's just totally random. I just don't have an explanation for it myself, and I can usually fix or diagnose things myself.

these hard drives were scavenged from an old server. there were originally in a raid 0. i mean, that could maybe be an issue.

If the HDDs don't have important info, remove drivers from the AMD one using DDU and try the 960 on there to see if the HDD is the issue.

Don't worry too much and just refrain from breaking things like I did. I've got nearly 10 SSDs that for some reason refuse to install Windows/Linux from messing around intentionally.

Why would i need to use a 3rd party software if i could just use control panel and uninstall it that way.

Control panel doesn't always clean as deeply as you'd like for cross-vendor GPU usage.

so it would appear that nothing's changed. I'm on the AMD hard driver, i used DDU to uninstall all the AMD drivers, then i switched to the gtx 960, and I still get BSOD errors, even just sitting on the desktop, and not doing anything at all. And it could possibly be the hard drives, considering they're really old, HDD, that were meant to be in a server in a raid 0. I just need to save up for a couple of ssd's to play with.
