I have a friend that is dead set on getting an Origin SLX and getting the most expensive option in each config option, 'cause it's custom laptop and if it cost more it must be better. I'm looking at the specs and they have a desktop 7700k running at 4.5ghz and is overclockable. As we know the 7700k is a rather hot CPU even with an AIO thanks to the TIM. I'm wondering if the 7700k in the Origin SLX will hit that horrible 100c limit and start to thermal throttle? Also are there any other pitfalls I should let him know about before he blows his money on this?

I spend too much on my PC. Then I spend even more on my Sim Rig. Damn, this stuff's expensive.

Well if you buy it from Origin it will hit that horrible 100c because Origin is a shit retailer. Get it here.

Your friend should also know that more expensive options aren't always the best. Example would be like the Killer 1535 wifi card. More expensive than the Intel 8625, way fucking worse.

I don't want to debate and I'm only asking out of curiosity(knowledge is power), but why is it better?

It's just about consistency. You need to run legacy versions of the Killer software to get the 1535 working with no drops 100% of the time. Which is bullshit. Objectively, the Killer 1535 is faster SLIGHTLY, when working properly, but getting it working properly is a pain. Sure, some people have it working fine with no issues with out of the box drivers so good for you, but do a quick google search on Killer 1535 connection dropping and you'll literally see threads since the beginning of the Killer branding. They have 0 clue how to build drivers. 0.

Intel 8265 is almost as fast, and FAR more reliable. Which is good. My AW does still run the 1535 as troubleshoot testing. I reinstall the newest drivers every month or so to see if it is working and when connections drops at any time, I revert back to a legacy driver I have that I've confirmed works at all loads with Killer Doubleshot and other features.

I never get drops...but just to be sure, that legacy driver is sounding pretty good.  Can you link me to it?

LOL I want to, but I literally don't have the link anymore. Completely forgot where it is. It's somewhere on NBR Killer 1535 something. I just grabbed it and never looked back.

Yeah, don't bother getting it from Origin PC. Please. Get it from HIDevolution.com as @Pendragon linked you. It *WILL* throttle to 100c at stock under relatively light loads from Origin PC. I should know, because I required delidding on mine to get temperatures somewhat bearable and some tweaking to not have to use max fanspeeds on even low end games like DragonQuest Heroes to avoid 85c spikes on my CPU using the "Overclock" fan profile (Auto would be worse as it's a less aggressive fan curve).

From HID he should be capable of at least handling most any load at 4.7GHz using max fans, and most games should be fine as-is.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
