AMD Pros:

Great price/performance ratio

8 cores for future multitasking

Cheaper motherboards

Cons:

High TDP

PCI-E 2.0

Dead socket

Lower IPC's (games like WoW get hurt by this)

Terrible temperature sensors

Intel Pros:

Top notch performance (i7-4770K does best an FX-8350)

Hyperthreading helps for heavy tasking

Runs cool

Boards support newer features

pretty accurate temperature sensors

Intel Cons:

Very pricey

Changes sockets every 1-2 series

Not very focused on the enthusiast platform

It's best to plan you build as a whole and not part by part with separated budgets.

I am. It's just that $300 is what I'm willing to spend on the CPU.

The only things that I put anything close to separated budgets on were the GPU and CPU.

Not a good idea in general. It's easy to end up with an unbalanced build that way.

You spend the money on the build in the end anyway so how you specifically spend the money shouldn't matter as long as it adds up less than the budget.

So this would be unbalanced?

Not really. It could be cheaper or better though.

By replacing the CPU and motherboard?

Nothing is finalized yet, so it's prone to change.

By replacing everything but the os.

Are you planning to buy soon?

Depends on when I figure out what to get.

I haven't bought a lot of what's on the list.

All I have is the case and PSU, because I've had them for a while and wasn't using them.

What psu do you have?

Looks great. Will it perform better/the same as the other one?

The $200 price drop is nice.

Pretty similar performance.

Because this one seems insanely cheap compared to what I had planned

In gaming perspective, on-par or even slightly better (R9-280X = factory overclocked HD 7970 GHz Edition).

In Rendering work, AMD system should stand out a bit more, due to the extra cores on hand.

Aftermarket CPU cooler will allow for overclocking on the FX-8320.

Stock cooler on the i5-4670K, not so much...

IMO, Seagate HDD > Hitachi (now part of WD but still kinda seperate) HDD

Seagate = WD

If you want to push it a bit more to the $1000 - $1100 range:

1) Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 or ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z !!

2) make it a 240GB / 256GB SSD instead of a 120GB / 128GB (I have two 120GB SSD's, wish I had a bit more space)

3) FX-8350 (same as the FX-8320 but clocked higher from factory...and higher binned chip)
