Cloning a HDD to a SSD

Vishvas Sudarshan

So I was in the process of setting up WD Acronis software to clone my disk when I got three options which say -

1) As is

2) Proportional

3) Manual

Total space used on my HDD is around 50GB and my SSD is 120GB.

Which on should I use?

Thanks! :)

I agree tbh

I wanted to get this done with, so I thought of Cloning.

But now that I think about it, a clean install is worth the extra time and effort.

Thanks guys! xD

It's actually not that simple, since there are some partitions you definetely not want to scale proportional!

Depending on your Windows installation, you might have an 100MB EFI Partition and an 450MB Recovery Partition, which should stay exactly the same size on the new drive to avoid wasting space and future problems.

Especially Windows 10 might produce some strange update/upgrade-errors, if the recovery partition is missing or not exactly the right size...

So, please select "manual" (third) and keep all partitions you don't recognize the same size as on your HDD. You can scale the user-visible ones (those you see in the explorer) to the sizes you want.

If you need more help, select "manual" and post a screenshot of the following window ;)

Edit: As for re-install vs cloning: If your OS is running fine and not full of bloat/crap-ware, there isn't really a reason for reinstalling...

Ryzen 5 5600, 32GB DDR4, GTX 3070Ti, Acer Predator x34

  • 5 months later...

Do proportional, and clone it. Changing partition sizes doesn't matter and won't affect you in the long run ever.

Don't reinstall. Waste of time. Cloning is a perfectly acceptable and functional solution.
