In Aincrad he HAD to become pretty much unkillable.  That game had such a crazy difficulty scale it wasn't funny and the head bad guy was cheating remember? 

 

In ALO he needed to be crazy good for two reasons: 1. If he died they would've had to add in filler episodes showing him starting over from his last save point.  lol  and 2. AGAIN the head bad guy was cheating.

The second arc is a LOT better than the shemale Kirito arc.

The head bad guy, the game designer whose name I can't spell, gave him that ability didn't he?    I forget if they ever say exactly why.

 

It's why only Kirito and that guy's secret in-game character had unique sword skills.  Because it was a special thing the designer guy did not normally in the game.
