When you go to install ( i assume new version of windows) from probably a USB drive, you have to select the drive to install to, at which point you also have to format the drive which will wipe all data from it. Even if you're not installing to that hard drive, as long as you have it plugged in and it shows up you should still be able to wipe it.

i assume you have a backup of your important stuff ?

when you boot from a windows install disc or usb stick and choose to install windows you can wipe and re-partition your HDD during setup.

you could also use a linux live disc and run gparted - wich, again, allows you to partition and format your drives to a lot of different file systems

The thing is that I will be installing the OS onto a new SSD. So the only thing I need is the formatted HDD. And yes I have the backup.

you can edit more than one drive with either method i mentioned - just make sure to mark the right drive and partition for windows installation before you click "next" in the window shown on the screenshot from @TVwazhere

good luck
