RyZen performance

My apologies if this topic has been covered already but I was wondering in which situation would you choose amd over intel? From what I understand ryzen is not suited for gaming but which applications or situations would ryzen be preferred over Intel? When they say Ryzen is a good workstation what exactly does that mean?

Oh and I was wondering is the performance between the cpu's noticeable? Specifically the lower teir cpu's ($300-350 range)

Doing any content creation whatsoever: AMD

 

Gaming at high resolutions and planning on not upgrading for a few years: AMD

Because of the vastly higher amounts of cores you can get with Ryzen compared to Intel, and workstations generally can make use of many cores very easily, Ryzen EASILY can crush Intel 4 and 6 core CPUs, without contest, in workstations. It's single threaded performance is still pretty close to Intel, meaning it's not like bulldozer, where octa core CPUs could barely beat quad core hyper threaded i7s even in multi core workloads.

Its not suited for high refresh 1080p gaming. With no streaming, video editing or anything like that. More or less Ryzen has replaced the X99 platform for the general public

If you can get faster RAM running then Ryzen is fine for gaming. If you're doing any sort of core intensive productivity and gaming, then Ryzen is your best friend. If you want the best gaming performance now, buy a 7700K and overclock it to 5GHz.

it comes down to one thing , how much you have & whats the best CPU  you can have for that price, it's really that simple, your personal price limit sets everything on what you buy for a build.

Ryzen gaming isn't as bad as people will have you believe. It is behind a 7700k @ 5ghz by quite a whack, especially in games that only use 1 or 2 cores. But multithreaded games Ryzen gives a pretty good account, Watch Dogs 2 is a good example. Keep in mind it is a baby in terms of architecture maturity and needs time for platform issues to be resolved and for devs to optimize their engines for Ryzens new instructions.

 

@DocSwag pretty much summed it up, however I'm hopeful for gaming on Ryzen in the near future, its only 3 - 4 weeks old

Saw a vid where on 3600 MHz ram Ryzen was on par with the 7700k, it was only one not very well known youtuber though so I'm taking it with salt and waiting for further testing but if it really could do that then 3200 MHz ram+Ryzen could be a good gaming combo.

Look at the game you want to play or the software you want to run and choose the CPU that gives the best performance per dollar based on actual performance reviews. Cut out the bullshit saying amd was made for x or intel was made for y. They were both made for the x86 instruction set and come in a range of cores, speed, and prices.

Also to add, people need to stop comparing Ryzen 7 to 7700k cause they're priced similarly. Yes I know people compare products based on price, but Ryzen 7 is AMD's take on the high end aka X99, 6900k +

 

The answer to 6800/5280k, 7700k, 6700k, 6600k is arriving soon in the form of the Ryzen 5 and 3 series

Or whenever the CPU is more the bottleneck than the GPU. It can happen at 1440p.

But it's significantly less, if you look at performance comparisons the difference is like 1-2%, at most, at 1440p.

All depends on the game. Also, as GPUs become more powerful, 1440p will become the new 1080p in terms of CPU load and bottleneck.
