1070 v 1080 for 1080p

OrphanGenocide

Is the 1080 a bit over kill for gaming in 1080 resolution? From what little research I have done it looks like a 1070 can pretty much handle everything in 1080 and get 100+ frames in most aaa titles at max graphics?

If you want to game at 144Hz or 240Hz, get the 1080. If you want 100-120Hz, get the 1070.

For a 1080 get a 1440p 144Hz monitor. For 1070 get a 1440p60hz or 1080p 144Hz. Both those GPUs are overkill for 1080p60

I'm rocking a 1070 myself, on a 1080p 144hz monitor. I think the GTX 1080 is overkill for 1080p, but there are some AAA titles the GTX 1080 can't even run 144 FPS on ultra. Take my 1070 as an example, I can run constant 144 FPS in Doom Ultra, but Witcher 3 maxed out gives me about 90 FPS average. Seen dips down to low 70s in Witcher 3, so demanding title :D

The 480 get about 100 frames for 1080p? I haven't looked into the 480's much.

What CPU do you have? If not a recent i7, don't bother with a 1080 at 1080P

I was thinking about 1080p 144hz with a 1070. That's why I made his post because 1080 seemed a bit over kill and with how the 480's are a bit cheaper I didn't know how'd they preform at 1080p.

If you want 144Hz:

  1. Get a 1080
  2. (This is more important) get a 7700K and overclock it to 5GHz.

I will be getting a new monitor just wanted to make sure I was getting something that worked with the gpu I'd be getting too. my plan was 1080p 144hz and a 1070. Sorry for not clarifying earlier. :(

Few games might actually not get 144hz on 1080p with the 1070, so if you can afford the 1080 you might want to get it.

get the fastest GPU you can afford. If thats the 1080 get that. Remember that 100 fps in todays games will NOT be 100 fps in next years games.

Lots of benchmarks out there for you to check out, just do a quick google search.

personally, I use a 1070 with an i5 4690k for 1440p @ 165hz and I find it is adequate.  My favorite games are running from 80 to 100 FPS (Doom, BF1, and Paragon).  An i5 with 1070 could crush 1080p 144hz!  But an i7 is definitely a better match for the 1070 at high FPS.

Depends on what games you want to play, and at which settings.

Here's a master-list of games that a stock GTX 1070 doesn't get 60 FPS in, or doesn't get a constant 60 FPS in, at 1080p with settings maxed. So far mentioned are:

Black Desert Online

TERA

GTA IV

GTA V

Watch Dogs 2

Rise of the Tomb Raider

Crysis 3

Assassin's Creed Black Flag
