Drive Spinning up When It Shouldn't

Every time i run Elite dangerous, if my hard drive is spun down, it will spin up before the launcher for the game appears. What's weird is that i know for a fact there are no files on my HDD that Elite needs, and steam is nowhere near that drive either.

 

So why does it need to spin up my HDD and make me wait for the clicky noise before i can play a game that i installed on Solid state media to prevent this exact thing ?

steam probably checking for other media libraries.

Could be Steam, not Elite itself. Assuming you launch the game through Steam, of course.

 

Nice to see a fellow CMDR, by the way - Elite's a very underrated game. o7 pilot.

i dno i did think that, but steam is already running and idling at the point where i run the game, so why would steam need to check again for new libraries ? i purposely kept steam away from my HDD to avoid this being a bit of a "silent but violent" kinda guy, always wanting my PC to be really quiet. Took me ages to get over the fact that i was never going to stop windows from spinning it up whenever it wanted.

 

can i tell steam to leave my HDD alone ? is that possible ?

wow how appropriate, i just extended my desktop onto my other monitor to play elite and still keep an eye on LTT.

 

The drive spun up when i selected extended desktop.......

 

the fuck are you doing windows ?
