facebook message app lag pixel

On my pixel phone over the last several days the Facebook message app as gotten really slow to respond. Clicking the chat head causes it to lag to open and scrolling in my contacts is really slow and or so lag filled it takes a little bit to find the person I want to message. I don't really know how to start figuring this out. Any ideas?

But it hasn't lagged before until now

clear app cache

settings > app manager (or something similar) > click on messenger > clear cache

Just uninstall the app and use the browser. Trust me, the facebook app is also a battery hog.

Battery does not seem to be much a issue with the battery surprisingly. Clearing the cache seems to have fixed the problem. Must have been some cached data the was slowing it down from past updates.
