I am now torn again. *Curse my indecisiveness lol*

Hey guys, I was originally going to get a GTX 1080 since they went down in price. However, from watching more reviews of the 1070 going against the 1080 the 1080 is really only give or take 10% faster than the 1070. This is especially true when comparing a base 1080 to an overclocked 1070.

I currently have a GTX 970 which, don't get me wrong, it still performs well... it's just I have a 1080p 144Hz monitor that I paid over 200 dollars for and most of my games on ultra/max detail don't even come close to reaching 100 FPS on average. So I don't really feel like I'm getting my money's worth out of my monitor. Speaking of money, money isn't overall an issue since I just got my tax returns, so yes, I could get a 1080. However I wanted to make more of a smart decision rather than just going "Durr, I have the money so let's just spend a crap ton of it and get a 1080" since the 1070 seems to be for the most part 100 dollars cheaper than most of the 1080's. I understand that some 1080's are sitting at 500 dollars, but those are either Gigabyte's cards (to which their 1080s haven't been that great it seems, plus I just overall don't care for their cards) or blower style cards.

So what do you guys think? Spend the roughly 100 dollars more on the 1080, or just go for a really good 1070?

The 1080 is an overclocking beast. If you overclock it, it will be 30% or so faster than the 1070....

I don't really care for AMD's GPU's because I personally like Nvidia's features more... Also the 1080's already went down in price.

What's the point of comparing a turbocharged M2 to an M3 without the turbo, when you could just put the turbo on and go faster regardless? Lol

Get this 1080 - MSI Gaming X, one of the BEST cards for $490 after rebate. Or the MSI DUKE which is $20 less but uglier and not *quite* as good

To highlight that first thing, it's mainly because I still have a 1080p monitor lol.

I really wish MSI would stop making their products red... and yeahhh that DUKE logo is pretty ugly lol.

The one you linked isn't the X variant. Also the duke has the same speeds as the X variant btw. May run a little louder since it doesn't have the "silent" modes. other than that idk.

I am pretty much in your shoes lol. What i am doing is waiting for the newer models of the 1080 with higher speed memory if what nvidia said is true.. either way a newer model may be nice. If you can't wait tbh the 1080 would be a good "future proof" card.

I think a 1070 should be enough. What games are giving you problems?

Pretty much any new game that's fairly demanding lol.

But DOOM 2016, Crysis 3, Borderlands 2 (completely maxed out with it's PhysX effects pretty much just doesn't run well at all for some reason), Fallout 4 and even Skyrim tend to not go anywhere near 100 FPS. DOOM 2016 is the closest, but it usually hovers around 80 FPS.

I really want to like the MSI Duke, too bad the logo is fairly "blegh" and it's not RGB. lol

There's going to be more 1080's?... I read the article about that just now and it says that companies/partners are allowed to do it and use the better/faster memory. I don't know if that means if they actually ARE going to do it though.

they will mostly likely sell the new memory sku once old stock is low enough.

which card you go for depends also on how long you plan to keep it. overclock 1070 vs base 1080 lol. the 1080 overclocks like all hell and definitively dumpsters the 1070.

I'd probably keep it for another 3, most likely 4 years.

What cpu is paired with your card?

Nothing.
