i7 6700k or 7700k?

Hey, I'm putting together my first PC and am unsure what CPU to put in. This is my current draft of the build (only part bought is the GPU):

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  (€339.99 @ Amazon Deutschland)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler  (€39.08 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  (€152.89 @ Mindfactory)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  (€125.99 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (€97.57 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  (€52.79 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Video Card: GALAX GeForce GTX 1080 8GB EX OC Video Card
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case  (€57.48 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Case Fan: Cooler Master SickleFlow (Blue) 69.0 CFM  120mm Fan  (€6.51 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Monitor: Asus VG248QE 24.0" 1920x1080 144Hz Monitor  (€267.76 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Total: €1140.06

For reference, the difference in price between the 6700k and 7700k is about €20.

Any advice on the motherboard would be nice too (Z170 or Z270). I'm currently looking at the MSI Z270 SLI Plus, but don't know if it's worth it over, say, a Z170-P by Asus.

Thanks!

Agreed, maybe not in IPC but I would argue if someone sold a 6700K that can overclock like a 7700K, most would pay the extra 20, at least I would.

Rather randomly I found this, not personally familiar with the TUF line-up but I'm sure someone can give a more informed opinion, it just seems a really good deal compared to that z170-a. https://de.pcpartpicker.com/product/z4wqqs/asus-z270-mk2-atx-lga1151-motherboard-z270-mk2

I'd recommend you look on ebay for i7 6700k's. Some people upgrade to a i7 7700k and decide to sell their old cpu. I got a 6700k for €220 with shipping.

Not really looking to buy second hand on something as major as PC parts, I think.

Nothing against you or your decision man. Just had a bad experience or two with ebay. For something as big and pricey as my first build (especially because I've never had to put together or set up a PC of my own) I would just prefer to get parts new and enjoy the warranty / not go through a mess if there's something wrong. :)

This boils down to if you need the extra 4 PCIe lanes from z270 or not.  Figure out how many M.2 drives you plan to run along with any other devices that will require additional lanes and go from there.  Optane will require z270 as well, but it's up to you whether you'll use that or not.

Similar to what I'm at now. I'd say that 140-150€ would be the max?

M.2 is for SSD's, right? I don't think I'll be getting one of those yet. No clue what Optane is either.

Would there be issues using a 7700k on a Z170, as others have suggested?

Sometimes you need a BIOS update. I have a Z87 board with a 4790k and never had a problem, but I've heard some people did. And you're not saving much by going with z170, plus, octane is like the one innovative thing about kaby lake (even if we won't see for a while :/ )

Given he doesn't seem to care much about features (for what I can tell) maybe an Asus 270-k and he can use the money saved to buy the 7700k in the first place. No thrills board, still has M.2, supports his chosen hardware and thrills cost money :P

To be perfectly honest, I bought a very high end board (for it's time) and I don't think I've used any of the features, asides from M.2 which may be important in the future and maybe thunderbolt if he cares about it, reliability and price should matter more.
