Samsung & Intel up the ante with upcoming OS war

nicehat

If you thought the battle between AMD and nVidia was intense, wait until you get a load of whats next. Multibillion dollar juggernauts Samsung and Intel are getting ready for a battle royale with Google over your next smartphone OS and more. For those of you unfamiliar, Tizen is an open source linux based OS that was born from the ashes of Intel and Nokia's MeeGo.

In the latest move, Intel and Samsung have found 36 other companies to back Tizen including the likes of Panasonic, eBay, Konami, Mcafee and The Weather Channel. The deal was announced by the Tizen Association which aims to broaden support for the OS. The full list of course includes game publishers, mobile carriers, and electronics giants, apparently enticed by Tizen's open source nature and flexibility. Trevor Cornwell, whose Appbackr company was another of the 36 to partner with the Tizen Association, cited the appeal of Tizen's commitment to more efficient coding: the Linux-based system breaks from iOS and Android in allowing developers to program in HTML5, CSS, and Javascript.

Another interesting fact about Tizen is its versatility as Trevor Cornwell emphasizes saying Tizen "extends beyond the smartphone and tablet ecosystem to a wider array of other connected device segments." In addition to a smartphone and tablet OS, Tizen touts itself as a software platform for netbooks, smart TV, and in-vehicle entertainment.

So, Tizen, a multiplatform OS, vs Android, a primarily smart phone and tablet OS. A question to all of my furry brained friends in the LTT forum: Is it time for Google to kick out the stops and push for implementation on smart TVs and laptops as well? What are the implications of the next Samsung Galaxy and Notes not featuring Android on Android's market share? How would/should Google counter? Is this good or bad for Microsoft's aspirations (including its revenue from Android patents)? One things for certain, with the ensuing streetfight thats about to ensue (ala Blu-Ray Vs HD DVD) you can sit back and enjoy the brawl.. You, the consumer will ultimately come out the winner.

Ah. Most of my rig is from the Paterson, NJ store with the Case, PSU and graphics card from the one in Long Island. The only parts I bought online were the SSD, from SanDisk and Seidon 240M, from Newegg.

Yea right now I live in Queens, so I did all my Microcenter shopping at the Long Island location. I have a friend that works there so I didnt have to show some chest hair for a discount this time  :P. I feel Microcenter is great for stuff that may break or get nicked in transit from an online vendor like cases.

I think it was pretty obvious that this would happen, maybe not with tizen... But Samsung "fleeing" from google and android to go their own ways.. Although, so far with this video I'm not too sure they are going to have a good time with tizen, but can't really tell before there's a consumer device with it.

Everyone have a cool signature. I don't, so I thought I would write something.

- Cool right?

Two things that contradict each other happen here.

1. Standardization on the same platform makes big deals for developing and progress, the  more different OS we have, the less software would be on each.

2. Taking power and dominance away from Google is a good thing, if it turns into the center of our tech ecosystem it will do whatever it wants with us, and take us down when it falls.
