you can find i5 2400 or 3550  for cheap but I would grab a gpu if you want to game

if you can just shell out the money for like a 750Ti + i5-2400/2500. Should be ~$140 USD max

Mabey go with a newer platform like skylake or ryzen when the low end stuff comes out. You will get more than just cpu performance. New connectivity (More sata 3, Usb 3/3.1 possibly thunderbolt "Thunderbolt is an intel exclusive technology" m.2, nvme) as well as better integrated graphics. Most of intels upgrades to there cpus have been in graphics so you could get better performance out of that.
