  1. 1. cooling options for mac mini

    • mineral
      4
    • 140mm fan with hole cut into top of case
      2
    • find a bigger heatsink
      1

I have a 2009 mac mini with a busted cooling fan and a busted dvd drive. I have already removed the dvd drive and fan. Replacing the fan is boring so I have come up with three options. I can cut a hole in the top of the case and put up to 140mm fan. I can submerse the whole thing in mineral oil. I can find a bigger heatsink and make it look even more Frankenstein than the 140mm fan idea.

EDIT - It already has a SSD installed by original owner

Well, if it's from 2009 its going to have a mechanical hard drive so NO MINERAL OIL!

I'd do the 140mm fan. The mac might get picky if it doesn't have it's apple certified cooler on it.

Fine you want the PSU tier list? Have the PSU tier list: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1116640-psu-tier-list-40-rev-103/

Oooh I have an idea! What about actually just replacing the fan? https://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/Intel-Mac-Mini-Model-A1283-Fan/IF171-001-1

54.95 USD for a fuckin fan?

Rather just drop a heatsink on top of the processor and strap 2x140mm or 1x200mm fan to it

idk

In NZ that = $78 which puts it over the line for import duties. Add another $100 in taxes, admin fees, and taxes on the admin fees; that is more than what I paid for the mac

I measured the pin spacing; its about 40mm X 38mm so no 8 fencing wire would do the job. It would prob suit it looking like something out of mad max.

Edit - na thats too small. need bigger

Suspended in mineral oil, with an RGB ring at the bottom for some effect, post picture. Remove RGB if it doesn't tickle your fancy.

Accept WCCF's check when they offer to buy the picture as part of their 'anon source' for Apple's new headquarters.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

RGB makes it go faster right?

I might take inspiration from the original RGB:

why not phase cool it?

you need a sub zero mac mini

i do actually want to use it without regularly buying coolant. I did see a computer a few years ago that used the phase change of LPG and using a car's turbo to burn it off; but mineral cooling is about as silly as i want to take it

No, that's flames and racing stripes.

RGB controls how hot or cold it runs, the green is just there to let you know if you've breathed out enough to help grow a tree.
