I would like to upgrade my existing Graphics card HD5850  to GTX 1080 Ti to enjoy VR Games.

 

Current CPU i7 930 2.8 LGA 1366 with RAM 24GB.

 

Is this possible?

That's an exceptionally old CPU that probably even an i3 Kaby Lake could walk on.  I'd be skeptical that much of a GPU-CPU imbalance is a good idea.

To Get 7700K I have to have a new build. it's very costly.

 

LGA 1366 has trouble channel. its too powerful CPU.

You will be bottlenecked by your CPU a lot. I suggest doing a platform upgrade.

That i7 will be a bottleneck though... It would be a good idea to get a 7700K and a 1070 instead of a 1080 Ti on its own...

I do agree about the bottleneck, I have myself a rig using a i7 975 Extreme with 12gb ram and the ASUS GTX 1080 Founders Edition.

The gtx 1080 doesn't run at his full performance unless I use my other system which is way more recent.

If the motherboard has a PCI-E slot, yes, is it worth it? No. You would be better off using cheaper parts, you would get a much better result going with something like this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DxWzjc which would only cost $160 more. If your willing to pay closer to $900-$1200 you could get yourself somethign really nice.
