Overclock the 1070 to 2000Mhz and the 980ti to 1500MHz, their average overclocks, and the 980ti will beat the 1070 on average. An interesting thing about Pascal and it's lack of scaling.

In fact, a 1500MHz 980 Ti, gets pretty dang close to a stock 1080....(In some games at least)

Yup. I'm not even going to argue with you there. AMD was trying to market Polaris as power efficient and gimped the clock speeds and bandwidth to do it (stock VRAM is 1750, mine is 2000).

 

The 580 is supposedly coming with 1340 as the base clock. If this is true, that's what it should have been.

Until you look at VR, there the 980ti get's it's ass handed to it. The information is still coming but the analysis using the new VR benchmarking tool does not look good for Maxwell.

Definitely! Pascal is much better for VR thanks to some small improvements that they made to the architecture

I don't see how it's different. See my response to PC guy above. If you overclock the 980 it will also be faster than a 1060. 1338 is what my card comes out of the box. It's not the limit of the 480. I was doing 1440 before we started getting jank drivers and in my former tiny cramped case. Other people on here have been even better OC than me.

I know. All in all, he was trying to argue that the node shrink didn't lead to more performance for Polaris which isn't true. We still didn't even talk about the fact the Polaris 10 chip is just slightly bigger than Tonga and yet performs like a much bigger Hawaii chip.

Anyway, Polaris was a bigger improvement over Hawaii than Pascal was over Maxwell.

Maxwell Titan X is faster than the 1070, don't let those misleading benchmarks on youtube where they are all stock miss guide you, a well overclocked Maxwell Titan X / 980ti can pretty much reach the stock level of the GTX 1080

An overclocked Maxwell Titan X is better for gaming in DX11, when it is watercooled and overclocked to the max.

Polaris 10 is 232mm squared and Tonga is 366mm.

Even on air cooler, when I used to have the Maxwell Titan X I managed 1572mhz stable on the core clock and it bested my brother's overclocked Zotac 1070 FE on DX11 already...

Power consumption. The 390 used 300+ Watts under load..... Polaris does the same with 150W!
