Alright, so one of my friends is needing a new gaming PC, and is on a bit of a budget. He wanted a build for under $900, and I came up with this. While I did the best I could with price to performance ratio, I'd like some input from the LTT community on how to improve this computer so my friend can be ballin' on a budget!

note: If you see that there's no hard drive of any kind in the build, don't worry. I already have a Seagate 1TB drive I got for cheapo from a local computer store liquidating its supply, and we'll be using that in the build.

A better PSU, and if you sacrifice a bit to a lower-end i5 you could probably get a 1070 in there.

He's not too worried about making it future-proof and super upgradable, so the one I selected should be fine. And is there even any lower end ones that wouldn't bottleneck a 1070?

Also, which manufacturer should I get the 1070 from? I wanna say ASUS as they are my favorite GPU manufacturer, but there's cheaper ones out there

That's an awful lot for that case, you can get an S340 for less.

Are you more focused on performance, or are aesthetics a little important as well?

What monitor does your friend have?

No need to change power supply. I guarantee that the whole system won't even consume 300W in the full-load condition.

H110 will either need a BIOS update, or have the most up to date BIOS installed.

Quality is an issue with cheaper PSUs, especially when overclocking.

Just because it's been out half a year doesn't mean companies won't have older stock of motherboards.

1. Well as an owner of both 480 and C3 I can say it's not true

Yeah but it would have more chance to come with an updated BIOS

you want to overclock but you buying a budget PSU and mid range GPU. thats like buying a old fiesta and wanting to race in F1. you need to accept what you can afford.

First off if the word "budget" is in your build already stop worrying about OC'ing, You are throwing a 212 on there (Now great cooler for great value) but not a OC'ing Cooler. Secondly you can OC that to its limits under a 212 and unless you won the Silicone lotto someone with a 1070 is going to flatten you in almost all benchmarks except the CPU only ones. so unless you just running those and don't want to game than go for it dude.

completely agree with the case change, you said you want great value for money, Hell I'm doing a 1800x Ryzen build in a S340 which is cheaper than your case don't know why you need a more expensive case, and you running a 212 so don't need space for Rads or all that.

I would prob do a decent i5 build for him, and dont worry about bottlenecks, way to many people are so hung up on that these days when they all buying mid range systems.

If he's doing any gaming I'd first choose the Best GPU within budget and build the PC back from there. GPU, CPU, PSU than MB, Case, SSD, Ram. In that order.

Redstone:
i7-4770 / Z97 / GTX 980 / Corsair 16GB  / H90 / 400C / Antec EDGE / Neutron GTX240 / Intel 240Gb / WD 2TB / BenQ XL24

Obsidian:

MSI GE60 2PE i7-4700HQ / 860M / 12GB / WE 1TB / m.Sata 256gb/Elagto USB HD Capture Card

Razer Deathadder Chroma / Razer Blackwidow TE Chroma / Kingston Cloud2's / Sennheiser 429 / Logitech Z333

Alright, well I downgraded the case to a BitFenix NEOS (just to save money), and got a 600w PSU. But my friend really wants to overclock, as he's gonna be running some very CPU-intensive games. Any good recommendations for coolers good for overclocking?

Alright, so I revamped the build and changed a few things. I went about ~$60 over budget, but that should be okay, because the extra money was spent on a better fan and a gtx 1070
