goal of overclocking?

Okay, thanks for the info, I just wanted to confirm those things to diagnose my problem. BC there's no reason for me to be hitting over 80 celcius at 1.25 volts on a 15 minutes real bench stress test.Do you know if some chips may have worse TIM application from the factory, or just have something defective to cause higher temps? I've reapplied paste, checked cooler, fans, air circulation, its all new and functional. kraken x52 is a 240mm AIO, but its one of the best, and is capable of much better results. So I'm starting to think it might be an issue with the chip?

I don't know about TIM application in the factory or some other defects, but that may be the case. I suggest you check overclocking temps for your cpu with a similar overclock and cooling setup and compare results.

I tested with a hyper 212 evo at same 1.25 voltage and it was a few degrees hotter than with my Kraken x52. Looks like the processor is still the problem but I'd like to test another chip to be sure. All I have available is an i5-4690k. If I run that at the same voltage of 1.25 then it should give me my answer... but I'm not sure what to expect bc Katy lake supposedly runs a bit hotter than other gen chips. Should a high quality chip from any gen run at a similar temp at the same voltage?
