ISP Speed

Fellow Techies,

I hope all are doing well. We are looking at changing data speeds with Spectrum (known more as Time Warner Cable). They have a service with 30.4Mpbs. We are a family of two, a student (myself) and my mother. What do yall think about it?

 

I game and we stream on netflix and on demand with our direct tv (generally not at the same time). I do homework and download different things as well.

i've used 30mbps for most of my life, and with my current family setup (totally legal torrents, youtube, VOIP, gaming) it was very usable and usually nothing buffered.

If we stream we are generally together on one device. Very (and I mean VERY) few times am I watching youtube or playing games while mom is using netflix.

As long as it is stable 30Mbps and doesn't drop below that, sure it's good enough for all you've mentioned. Heck a 15Mbps connection would be good enough for two people.

Even more so if you prioritize certain connections/services through QoS in your routers and that you don't allow your "download client" to use 100% of your connection at a time, though proper QoS would easily counter this. Like making the computer in the living higher priority and what not.

Thankfully there is no data cap. Even if there way. I don't see us going over that. Seems like a decent option.

See, you guys think USA is bad for internet speeds. Try moving to Canada, where we pay double the price for similar download speeds, with half what you guys get for upload. The best we can do outside of any major cities across the nation is 100 to 150 mbps download, and about 30 to 50 mbps upload, but to get upload higher than 15 to 20 mbps you pay through the nose.

 

If you live in Vancouver or Toronto though there are independent Fibre providers like NovusNow who offer 100/100 mbps for $49 CAD / month for the first year, then $105 CAD / month thereafter. Still not great, but it's better than other residential providers.

im in Toronto with Rogers, $100 for 200/10 (no contract, flat rate, no bandwidth limits)

but coaxial. Oh well

Well this is not coming out of my pocket. I do pay bills just not this one. So..... not exactly my choice, but I can agree that it would be nice to go cheeper. Biggest thing, I just don't want us to regret it and have to mess with TWC to switch back.

Again, if you live in a large metropolitan area, you have A LOT more options for different providers and packages, since there's more competition usually. That being said, I'm on the West Coast, where things aren't as built up in terms of infrastructure as the East Coast, so that plays into it as well.

There isn't a lot of competition here. Resellers don't offer coverage here, and if they do it's barely cheaper than the ISP itseld. 

 

Bell still has sub megabit speeds here, I think they've given up
