TN vs IPS

I've found this monitor which seems great value for the specs it has (144hz, 1440p, Freesync), however the only downside is the fact that it has a TN panel rather than an IPS. My question is therefore whether I will see a noticeable difference when gaming, watching videos and general browsing if I go for this TN monitor over a more expensive IPS. Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is night and day. After switching to IPS TN looks matted, dull, and washed out to me. Also viewing angles are crazy

Yes, you will see a difference between TN and IPS. 

 

Considering how a monitor is normally quite a long term component, I would consider investing some more money into getting an IPS panel rather than wanting to replace the TN later.

The Acer XF270HU is the cheapest I know of. 1440p 144Hz IPS FreeSync for £450

There are bad TNs, and there are prety good TNs.

That linked one is one of the better TN panels out there, with 8bit Panel.


Depending which kind of IPS you know, the Difference is honestly not that big, as people here tell you.

Honestly. I was thinking the same. Now i have a TN 165 Hz g-Sync Monitor with 1440p resolution, and i'm more happy with it, than with a more expensive IPS one.

The IPS had horrible Backlightbleed. The TN doesn't. It does have the typical TN disadvantages. But they are totally fine.

Viewing angles are not an Issue. i'm not dancing around the Desk, i'm sitting on Front of it. No changes, no problem.

 

I can get the Colors to nearly the same quality, than my Dell U2414H IPS Monitor.

 

That AOC Monitor above is one of the most interesting / best gaming Monitors for AMD Users, if 27" is too big for you.

 

23,8" with sharp 1440p Reoslution, 144 Hz, and Freesync.

Only bummer is the TN Panel, which is comletely fine for the Price.

 

Try it out, if you're not happy with it, return it.

But TRY it for yourself, don't just start thinking TN can only be crapshit, because 1-2 people said so.

 

Like i said. There is a HUGE difference between the better TN panels, and those 100€ cheapo ones.

I don't find it fair you conpare a very good TN panel with a horrible IPS one. Good IPS monitors don't suffer from backlight bleed. And it doesn't matter if you calibrate a TN monitor, a calibrated IPS looks way better, the difference is huge. As for viewing angles, that depends. If it's a 1 monitor setup, then i don't think it would be a problem. Multiple monitors is a no go. IPS is better, but TN is way cheaper which makes it a tempting option for the consumer.

The IPS i compared with was a 700€ AOC Monitor (Acer/Asus/Viewsonic have the same Panel for 800€), while the Dell S2417DG was a 420€~ one. (now switched to the Acer XB241YU). Why is that not fair? That's double the Price.

 

I don't think this is not a fair comparison, as there is no better IPS display with these exact specs: 1440p / 144 Hz.

it's not fair to take any good 60 Hz monitor, they are irrelevant here. That IPS Panel i had, was the highest best IPS Panel with 144 Hz and more than 1080p, and is the only one available. there might be different revisions of the same Panel, but that's how it is.

 

Which Calibrated TN and IPS Panels did you try yourself?^^ If you can say there is a huge difference, i guess you saw it yourself?! Which models were they?

 

 

If you ned 144 Hz, IPS is NOT better. It doesn't have the disadvantages of TN, but comes with others instead, like horrible quality control (as no other Panal manufacturer makes these types of Panels). Which is why i went "down" to TN. The TN disadvantages are much better to live with, than have to order 10+ IPS Monitors, untill you find a decent one without horrible Backlightbleed, dead pixels, strong clouding, etc etc.

And this is the whole Problem here. There are no IPS Monitors with 144 Hz, that are Free of those Problem.s They simply do not exist, except you're lucky after 5-10 Orders. That's just the way things are right now. There 

 

If you go for 60 Hz? Yea sure, i would go for IPS too all the way, or better, VA (no Glow, deeper Blacks)

 

Btw, i use my TN Panel (Acer XB241YU) now as my Main Monitor, while my IPS one is just the 2nd screen for applications. I ahve a multimonitor Setup, and i don't see a Reason, why this would be a no go. Viewing angles are pretty good, i don't notice any noticeable color shift while sitting in Front. Sure, if i dance around, and move my Head to the side, it shifts a bit. Bbut i've seen MUCH worse.

That dude has 3 Monitors there, and compares the screen in a Dark room, same Picture on all.

 

Left: Dell U2414H (same i have)

Middle: Dell S2417dg (that 1440p, 165 Hz G-Sync TN Panel)

Right: Asus PG279Q. THis is one of the best high end gaming Monitors, 849€, 1440p, 27", IPS, 165 Hz, G-Sync.

 

I'm Sorry, but to me, the differences are not huge. This is nothing, i would call Huge. ^^

these are Differences, you would be able to see in a Side to Side comparison, when you look closer. But if it's the only panel?

 

I would honestly like to see such people in a Blind test. Sit still, have a Panel in Front of you, and let someone show a few high quality Pictures. And without moving your head an inch, you have to say if it's an TN panel or IPS. I would be very cusious, how many People would fail that^^"

Because i KNOW, i would not be able to tell the difference depending on the Pictures shown.
