sooo, my boss decided it would be a great idea to put someone who hasn't touched html or css in 5 years onto a frontend dev team because they were understaffed and our backend operations basically have no on-going projects. Well, i mainly deal in javascript php and c++ and sql - NOT html or css - and im basically fucked

one issue im having is setting the url or href of a background image to a link instead of a file on the server - i don't know why, but the more experienced front end devs told me to do that

.showcase {
background: url (need to use a link instead of file path here - pls help)
}

instead of for example "/images/backdrop.jpeg" you could also use "mywebsite.com/images/backdrop.jpeg" if this is what you're asking.

Yeah I meant that (although keep in mind, that image on the other site could disappear or change, causing yours to display an error. Unless you're very sure you need to embed the image, just make a copy on your own server. Of course keep copyrighting in mind).

But I believe you're after this:

background-image: url("somewebsite.com/images/backdrop.jpeg");

If this still doesn't work, the other website probably turned off embedding of all sorts.

I don't do web development professionally, just as a hobby.

Just do this, you were pretty close.  Might I suggest learning CSS super quickly using a tutorial site or something.  It's dead easy and should only take a day to learn the basics, doing things like animations and art are much harder, but I doubt your boss would care if you did that.

the industry moves super fast, jobs in applying for still use php 5. People want full stack, might be worth setting a weekend a side to learn html,css they aren't hard to learn.

a lot of places are using bootstrap and angularJS for their front end so might also be worth having a look there.

it's really not changed that much, there are a few new tags and native support for playing videos but it's the same.

That's not exactly true. CSS3 is just an extension of "CSS2" or whatever. Ditto with HTML5. I started learning HTML/CSS five years ago and nothing's really changed.

Though the one powerful thing they added in CSS3 was media-queries. That's about the only thing I'd say you should really learn since it's the basis for responsive design.
