I have a Free-sync Monitor but it says freesync not supported

FreeSync only works over DisplayPort

It only works over DisplayPort for the OP, because FreeSync over HDMI only works on specific monitors, not all FreeSync monitors.

was able to by switching to hdmi2 port . really weird.

I have a VG245H and I got FreeSync working over HDMI. You can find the option in the image category in the 'more' section.
