I would, unfortuntely I'd have to spend too much on other stuff, such as a new mobo so preferably I would not want to switch sockets.

I'm assuming you're selling the i5-6400? So sell it with the motherboard.

If you don't have a Z chipset (motherboard model that starts with Z), you'll have to buy a new motherboard anyway.

Are you sure? Even when buying another skylake cpu such as the i7 6700k?

Yes. Only the Z series is capable of overclocking.

You were correct, But Does this mean that I cannot put the chip in, or that I can't overclock?

What I'm asking is the k version has slightly higher clock speeds and I was curious as to if I could still put in the chip without overclocking it.

You could still put the chip in, but it's honestly a waste considering those chips are meant to be overclocked and thus higher speeds.

Yes that is true, And thank you for your comment, I have the potential to get either the 6700 and the 6700k for the same price, and was thinking about just getting the k version because why the hell not.

The K version would be better, but my point is that a Ryzen model should still be something to consider. Once they fix the Windows 10 bug, they should be significantly better for the price. You could also wait for the mid-tier ones if you don't mind a couple months.
