Do you really need to back up your data?

Hi, 

so I was just wondering, do I really need to back up my data and why should I do it?

 

Also, on my computer I have an 128gb ssd with my os on it and an 1tb hard drive containing only my game. If I decide to back up my data should i only back up my ssd with my os and files or do both?

 

I see two ways to back up my data.

 

1. to use raid trough my mobo

 

2. i have kaspersky anti-virus and it has an option too back up my data

 

witch one should i use?

 

Last thing, if i decide to back up my hard drive, do I need a 2 tb hard drive or a 1 tb should be fine. ( I only put game on my hard drive and I delete the ones I don't need so it is never full)

Back up stuff that is irreplaceable. Like family photos, documents, game saves, etc. If you can get the program or game back, then it is not of a priority. 

 

even the 15GB that Google Drive offers is enough for that sort of stuff.

back up your important documents, old game saves, etc in google drive. for photos use google photos. for a backup of your computer as a whole, create a system image you can restore to

I remember in the past, almost any time Linus ever brought up SSDs it was always followed by something along the lines of "if you use SSDs then it is highly recommended to back them up every night" and I was all thinking at the time the dude was very paranoid, making it sound like an SSD was a ticking time bomb, just waiting to die and lose all data.

 

Depending on what year you got your ssd, I'd say those made around 2014 and on would have very long life span and reliability for those not using them intensively. If you want to back up things just do what you don't want to lose. I seriously doubt every night is needed, if anything once a week

honestly just depends on how sensitive your data is and how much work you are willing to redo if you lose everything, personally we do weekly updates at the office I do work at.

Like I said, once a week is more reasonable. Compared to Linus whom always made it sound like an SSD will explode any day now

Have 3 backups. One in a NAS or file share. One in the immediate PC and finally one that is off site.

The thing with backups is that, often, people don't care to ever test them. You will never know if your backups work until you test them.

 

Would you throw your main drive in the ocean for the cost of its replacement plus $500?

 

If your answer is YES and you do not have backups: You probably don't need backups.

If your answer is YES and you do have backups: You're either doing a fantastic job with testing your backups or you're just naive.

If your answer is NO and you do not have backups: You should probably backup your shit.

If your answer is NO and you do have backups: You either need to start testing those backups or you're just paranoid (not judging if you are)

Short answer is yes.

All disks have a finite lifetime. Sooner or later they'll die, and they don't always warn you in advance so you can transfer your data.

As others said, only what is impossible/hard/costly to replace, or you deem worth saving: like media libraries, saves, work/school documents, etc.

The OS and programs can be reinstalled, there are restore points, etc. Not much point in backing them up.

Personally, I'd say neither: use a dedicated drive that isn't powered all the time, but only at backup time. If you are fine with storing it all in the cloud you can go for that as well, but understand what you are doing.

Raid isn't recommended as a backup unless you also have an actual backup behind it: it gives you protection agaisnt disk failure, but not against data corruption, accidental deletion, etc.
